An Essential Book

I've been a big fan of Glenn O'Brien's tone and perspective for a long time. As GQ's style guy and a further contributor to the magazine and its now-defunct podcast, it would be easy and perhaps predictable for him to take a dismissive or snobby stance while dealing out the dos and don'ts of taste, the way that other style and advice tsars seem to traffic in snarkiness while resenting their readers (thinking of Esquire's sex columnist here). But O'Brien the writer is always unfailingly polite, empathetic and seems generally concerned with being of service in his column, in an almost Buddhist sense.

I was a little bit worried about the book after GQ published a teaser for it which distilled some of O'Brien's tips on social politics into a single, awkward article that, stripped of the context of the book, came across as a bit bitchy and shallow. I bought the book anyway and my worries were unfounded. Most of this book should be canonized. As someone discovering for the first time O'Brien's writing beyond the pages of GQ, I was surprised at what a powerful prose stylist he is. Some of the passages are more effusive than others and when he really gets going there's a huge, poetic lift. This is not a superficial book. He really lays out a clear philosophy of living that, at the risk of oversimplifying it, treats manners as a form of deference to the beauty of life - by paying attention to details and expressing ourselves in a thoughtful manner, we are telling the world and its people that we love it enough to take it seriously.

If I had a gripe it would be the numerous redundancies - for instance the fifth time O'Brien tells us who Beau Brummell is, or the seventh time he makes the point that casual dress codes in the workplace have served to blur social status. I couldn't tell if these were editing errors or just O'Brien having a senior moment but as an attentive reader it did feel a bit like having my intelligence insulted to be re-told the same things so many times, sometimes even on the same page. [Edit: Some have said this book is a compilation of previously existing articles. I'm not sure if that's the case but it still seems like those redundancies should be addressed in this compilation for readability.]

Some of the chapters, such as the ones on dealing with air travel and doctors, are marred by a grouchiness that, as a man in my early 30s, I just couldn't relate to. But then again, this is O'Brien at his most explicit and not his most polite. And the candor is exhilarating elsewhere, like in the rants on drug use, taste as a matter of survival and a particularly inspired chapter on the vital powers of old age vs. the emptiness of youth worship.

I could have used a chapter on fatherhood and it seems that a section called How to Compete would have been a no-brainer for a book on manhood. But maybe they'll tack that on to future editions - I definitely had the sense when reading this that I was encountering the first edition of something that would last (and regretted spilling so much food on its pages).

Buy this book. For my sake. I need compatriots.

You remember Glenn O'Brien. As music columnist for Andy Warhol's Interview magazine, G.O'B. was the periscope on the submarine that was underground, punk rock during its landmark decade in the 80's. He later expanded his sphere of influence into fashion and art through his "Style Guy" column at GQ magazine and a stint with the publisher of magazines like "Antiques" and "Art in America.". In fact, when it comes to fashion, style and the arts, the O'Brien arsenal is tough to beat.

It is then with both great anticipation and curiosity that we watch as he turns his gaze to the subject of manhood in the newly released volume "How to Be a Man: A Guide to Style and Behavior for the Modern Gentleman." (Rizzoli)

So what is a man in the modern day sense and what does it take to become one?

In O'Brien's view, a man is a person who employs the utmost of style and care when it comes to everything from wardrobe to behavior to the way he exudes his sexuality. O'Brien is a taskmaster when it comes to natty dress, manners and even where a man fits along the hetero, homo and metro-sexual continuum. In fashion, O'Brien's purview runs head-to-toe covering every detail from haircuts to underwear, collar-stays to ascots. There is even an ample discussion of the so-called `dandies.' (He likes hetros and dandies, though he chastises some gays for not being "gay enough.")

No one can fault O'Brien for his erudite musings. His range of knowledge is exemplary - covering cultures from the ancient Greeks to the Taliban, philosophers from Socrates to Chuck D. (Only O'Brien would cover the range of beards from ZZ Top to Rutherford B. Hayes.) His writing style is about as punchy as it gets, with each sentence delivering like the cutting remarks of a professorial stand-up comic. One must only question his target.
Has he written the book for people like himself? Is O'Brien merely trying to show off his erudite plumage? (probably) Is he so imbued with the Manhattan lifestyle that he can no longer relate to readers in the flyover states - or they to him? (He basically writes them off towards the end in his chapter on patriotism when he proclaims of the great middle ground, "Wouldn't they be happier without our smug East Coast attitudes?")

In all, O'Brien's book is not a guide for the everyman but rather a dissertation of a certain style designed for the (increasingly) select few for whom such rules still seems to matter. But as a throughly entertaining read on the art, fashion, behaviors and history of the modern gent (dandy or not) it succeeds no matter what code you ascribe to - dress or zip.

How To Be A (Certain Kind of) Man

These days, there are any number of men who consider themselves ultra stylish and therefore highly qualified to dispense sartorial advice. Look no further than the internet, and its endless guides to style, masculinity and so on. If you can buy The Right Look at Urban Outfitters, and spend an hour a day curating the ripped-off photos on your Tumblr blog, you're practically a style icon. O'Brien actually earned his status as a purveyor of style through years of toil at Interview, GQ, Vanity Fair, et al.

I've long been a fan of Glenn O'Brien. As much as he gives sage advice, he's funny and irreverent, too (if sardonic wit is your cup of tea). There are more important things going on in the world, and O'Brien knows it. I am of the camp that believes you can have your well-fitting pants and work for peace on earth, too.

How To Be A Man is smart and funny, and sure: some of his proclamations are ludicrous; saying someone like Armani looks good with his deep-fried glow is preposterous. As is the suggestion that type-o blood types need to eat meat. Insanity!

But good manners are a lost art; and I would argue that the importance of never wearing flip flops in public can't be over-stated. O'Brien has plenty of important things to say that both mock and embrace convention, simultaneously.

How To Be A Man is really about how to be a certain kind of man. But the world could certainly stand more of a certain kind of man. And if you're the kind of man, like myself, who occasionally needs some words of wisdom on waxing...: this book is indispensable.

I expected Rangle River to be one long story but it is a number of excellent short western stories - some of them could have been the source of a much longer western. The last section is a very good description of a journey in the West - an excellent piece of writing by Zane Grey.

Short Works from the Master Story-teller

Rangle River, the title story from this collection is set in Australia and is a good 'cowboy' story, and as with most of ZG's shorter works he intensifes his characterizations. It's a good story, and probably the outline for his novel, The Great Trek. In a slightly differing form, Amber's Mirage, the other short novel was used as a prologue or the background for two other Zane Grey novels, but it stands well alone. There are two first hand accounts of Zane Grey's travels in this collection as well--Don: the story of a dog; and Nonnezoshe, a story detailing Zane Grey's trip to the Rainbow Bridge and through Monument Valley, a trip which inspired his early works--Riders of the Purple Sage and The Desert Crucible. You will meet the Mormons and the Indians who taught ZG about the west, and meet fictional characters you will want to read about again, and again. Whether fiction or non-fiction Zane Grey can not be beat when it comes to description of times, places, or people. I highly recommend this book.

A quality paperback

I am stoked! The type in Dorchester's Rangle River is clear and sharp on good, thick paper. This is the best-looking printing job I've seen on a paperback book for a long time, and I have read hundreds of paperbacks in my eight years in Thailand.

I was pleased to find an informative and nicely written author biography. Grey's wife Lina was his editor, collaborator, and business manager.

I haven't seen a misspelled word yet in Rangle River. That would be unusual for any book -- rare, anyway. There are no widows. The words and letters are not crowded. Someone did a good job of designing this book.

Zane Grey is a consistently fine author. I would not put these stories in a class with Riders of the Purple Sage, but they have their charm. Real people, real feelings.

These are stories you could read out loud to young people who want to learn about Western cowboys and prospectors. They might spark discussions about greed, loyalty, love, honesty and any deep feelings that need to be shared.

A. The advent of the many-core platform means that developers have more processing resources in the form of "cores" at their disposal than ever before. Traditional programming constructs do not allow developers to leverage these cores. As computers add more and more cores with each new platform released by hardware manufacturers, developers will need to find ways to maximize the utilization of these resources. Akka provides a platform for doing just that, and allowing your application to scale up and out as more resources become available.

Q. What will readers walk away with after reading "Effective Akka?"

A. After reading "Effective Akka," readers should have a firm grasp of the kinds of coding issues they may encounter when developing with actors, regardless of whether they're using Scala/Akka or Erlang. Many of the concepts are relevant to developers who are writing asynchronous code without actors as well. Be very careful about closing over state from outside of a code block. Capture and stabilize such state by placing it into local values so that you know you will have an unchanged value at the time you actually need it.

Keep your code simple. Make more atomic methods and functions that do only one thing, and combine them to accomplish your goals.

Never reference the keyword "this" from inside an actor. Don't use it and don't register it elsewhere. Pretend the concept does not exist, where possible. Learn to think in terms of "ActorRef" and use them at all times, even when communicating with yourself.

Create failure zones in your application by assigning thread pool resources to specific groups of actors. This way, if one actor is monopolizing a thread with a computationally-intense activity, only a limited subset of other actors are affected by not having that resource available to them.

Avoid blocking as much as possible. Always write code to be asynchronous unless there is a specific block of code where blocking must occur. Put any such blocking tasks on their own threads, or use Scala's Managed Blocking to keep other resources from being starved of a thread.

Its an intro booklet.

This is more of a booklet than a book. Great starter material if you don't have access to the web and you are considering Akka. This book needed additional examples and more material and depth. The writing is clear and concise. The author offers a few tips that really should have been expanded into examples (logging, jmx, metrics). Most of the material feels like a rehash of the Akka documentation. The engraving on the cover is cool.

Good, but not comprehensive

This short book, written by Jamie Allen, contains number of advises for Akka developers. I believe that you should be already familiar with Akka framework before reading the book, because the author assumes that you already know how to use at least the basic features of the framework.

First chapter of the book discusses the approaches to designing actor based applications. It's hard not to agree with the author about the presented ideas, but I think it's something that most Akka developers already know.

Effective Akka's second chapter presents two quite small patterns used in real world applications. I liked the first one, but the second one I consider a tip instead of "pattern" - like Jamie called it. Application of the pattern are presented with unit-tested source code, which is definitely a plus.

Third chapter (the last one!) presents general advises when using Akka, but I feel developers should be familiar with them already as these advises are not much different that general programming / designing rules. The only difference is that here Allen show how they are relevant to building actor based application. You will also find here ideas for creating systems with resilience and high-performance.

In conclusion, I'd like to say that the book seems nice to me. On the other hand, as Akka developer, I'd love to read a book that would push me on two levels higher in building actor systems, and this book left me a little bit disappointed in that regard.

its good, its short, it has its perils and its very advanced

I found the general concurrency best practices in this book very useful, they are general enough to include not just actor practices but includes them. Example how to avoid code which is dependant on time, why STM is goof but still not a magic bullet solving all your problems, where to beware when using it etc.

Its mentioned in the book its for advanced and that's true. You should already feel very comfort with actors, Scala, multithrrading , futures, high scale programming. If you are then this book clarifies a few items. If not you can also learn from it but it will require effort. Personally I do learn from it I like it. I only wish it would be longer more comprehensive. Bottom line it fills a gap so its a good read. Most books avoid the difficult questions this book tries to answer that's exactly why I like it.
