The Title is My Dream...(someday, hopefully)

Very informative book, offering a wealth of information about (you guessed it) Moving to Hawaii. Vern does a great job breaking up the book into around 30 sections or so, with each chapter focusing on a specific topic, often ranging vastly different from the others (ex: housing, employment, education, language, religion, etc.). The ebook is succinct and to the point.

My only qualm with the book is that I came across a few errors (which I wrote to him about; he is incredibly easygoing and approachable, and will respond to you very quickly!), and there were a few sections that, although the book is advertised as up to date, were still referring to 2013, or another year not current. I'll wager this wasn't intentional, as Vern seems like a great, down-to-earth guy, and probably just missed these.

Overall, however, if you're looking for information on how to move to Hawaii, I'm not sure if there's a better place to start. I'm sure you will find out quite a bit from this ebook. And like I said, Vern seems like an amazing guy, so do take advantage of that.

John White is teacher of Film, English and Media at Parkside Community College and Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge. A Great Collection

This is a cliche, but this book will be useful to both an amateur approaching film studies and to film experts. The essays are so varied and rely on so many different critical modalities that a sweeping survey of both the history of American cinema and the plethora of approaches to film is created. It is pretty astounding how intricately some of the writers in this anthology approach their respective films. The essays on Psycho, Chinatown, Aliens, Casablanca, and Se7en are just a few that stand out as wonderful. Paradoxically, the critics write with such an assured sense of conviction that one can easily enter into a dialog with any essay and explore problems of methodology, critical framework, or the writer's basic understanding of the movie in question. I think this is a very good thing. Negotiating with writers that we assume to have authoritative voices is how criticism progresses. For example, I'm very intrigued by the posits of the Aliens essay, but I can also think of ways where the author's logic can be brought into question. Rather than negating the value of the essay, a dialectic is made. For first-time film students, acknowledging that these essays, though extremely provocative and well-written, can be questioned will allow a fledgling film critic to engage in a discourse with a critical approach to a work--helping the student find their own voice and learn how to both read and use critical sources.

Also, the book is to be admired simply because it disregards the trite pop-criticism that is spewed all over the web from critics who only approach a film from a singular, subjective approach of what a "good" film should be. There are many films that, while not classics (whatever the hell that means), that can be considered extremely important for a number of other reasons. I think this book subtly dismisses the popular criticism in order to create truly intriguing works about a wide variety of film, and that said films should not be limited to an exploration of one perspective.

About the Author
The first play in D. C. Jackson's 'Stewarton Trilogy' for Borderline Theatre Company, The Wall, won the Best Ensemble at the 2007-8 Critics' Awards for Theatre in Scotland and was shortlisted for the Saltire Society/ Royal Mail Scottish First Book of the Year Award. It was followed by The Ducky in 2009. The Chooky Brae completed the trilogy in 2010. My Romantic History was staged earlier in the same year by the Bush Theatre and Sheffield Crucible. He has also had short plays produced by Oran Mor (Matinee Idle, Drawing Bored, Out on the Wing and Company Policy) and the Arches Theatre Company (Hello, part of Spend a Penny). He is working on new plays for BBC Radio 4, the National Theatre of Scotland and the Royal Court, and was the Pearson Writer in Residence at the Royal Court for 2008.
