The Kite Runner follows the story of Amir, the privileged son of a wealthy businessman in Kabul, and Hassan, the son of Amir's father's servant. As children in the relatively stable Afghanistan of the early 1970s, the boys are inseparable. They spend idyllic days running kites and telling stories of mystical places and powerful warriors until an unspeakable event changes the nature of their relationship forever, and eventually cements their bond in ways neither boy could have ever predicted. Even after Amir and his father flee to America, Amir remains haunted by his cowardly actions and disloyalty. In part, it is these demons and the sometimes impossible quest for forgiveness that bring him back to his war-torn native land after it comes under Taliban rule. Wonderful writer, please write more!

This was an excellent story very well written so that it reads smoothly and flows and connects reader with the characters throughout.

Hosseini's characters are so very real to life. No one is perfect some have perfect moments and some are vicious animals to be annihilated.

As the Middle East has become more and more a part of our lives I feel like I need to understand the culture and the history to understand what is happening in our world here in America. Khaled has made this quest available to some extent as he is from the region and knows his people and culture. He is able to communicate it to us in the West so we can learn and understand and gain affinity his the people and the culture.

A haunting story of self-examination and opportunities lost overlaid on a tragic historical backdrop.

Unquestionably well-written and emotionally impactful, THE KITE RUNNER deserved the heaps of praise that it received. Khaled Hosseini has earned himself the reputation of a shining star amongst many talented new authors. Most of the book is heavy with a deep sense of impending doom and a certain sadness pervades the entire story. The narrator, Amir, is not a likable character, displaying many of the least-respectable attributes of an uncertain and self-conscious boy and man. It is this sense of self-loathing and self-doubt that makes the story so powerful, as readers will relate to similar feelings, especially as adolescents. We have all acted the part of the coward despite knowing our actions could have resulted in helping others. We have all behaved in childish ways to diminish others for our own perceived benefit. And we have all thought back on certain experiences or lost opportunities with a deep regret. That is the main focus of this story, where we follow a journey from childish self-centeredness to regret to acceptance and redemption.

That story is layered over another story about a country that went from relative freedom and prosperity to unimaginable terror and poverty, and this second story is every bit as powerful as the primary plot. Afghanistan provides a unique and powerful setting for THE KITE RUNNER. Hosseini turns this novel into an emotionally-charged look at the forces at work in his native country, an topic that he obviously feels strongly about. This historical backstory gives the novel some much-needed grounding in the real world. Amir and Hassan are unforgettable, and their heart-wrenching story is worthy of your time. Highly recommended.

An Emotional Plight of Two Lives

Khaled Hosseini is a distinguished writer from Afghanistan and founder of Khaled Hosseini Foundation to help the refugees and downtrodden of his country.

The Kite Runner is a book based on two young boys who lived together but were never close to each other due to their social status.

Storyline: Amir, the son of a rich man in Kabul, Afghanistan is befriended by Hassan, a boy who is born to a low caste Hazara. Hassan, though is the servant’s kid, is allowed to play, dine and assist Amir in his daily routine. The innocent loyalty of Hassan towards Amir is so high that Amir’s father treats him as his second son and never treated him like a servant. But Amir doesn’t replicate the same to Hassan many times, particularly one day when Hassan was attacked by a group of anti-Hazara boys from the neighbourhood, when Hassan runs to fetch the kite struck and won by Amir in the famous Kite Festival of Kabul. This guilt of betrayal makes Amir to distance himself from Hassan though the later never minded it. This leads to Hassan leaving Amir’s home forever. Amir and his father later migrate to America after Afghanistan was taken over by the Russians. Hassan is forgotten by Amir in due course. After some years, Amir gets married in America and decides to visit Afghanistan followed by a phone call by his uncle Rahim. There he comes to know of his life secret that Hassan is non other than his half brother born to his father and the servant maid. Hassan dies in a Taliban attack trying to protect Amir’s house in Kabul a little earlier and is survived by his son, Sohrab. This child of Hassan is abducted by the Talibs from an orphanage and sexually abused. Amir takes the responsibility of rescuing Sohrab from the Talibs and adopts him, as a remorse to all his sins of betraying his father. Moreover Amir himself is childless. But the emotionally insecure Sohrab will not be able to gel into the new family as he misses his parents and freedom. After Afghanistan is freed from the Talibs, Amir and his family re-visits his homeland to do some charity activities. During one such activity, Sohrab takes interest in flying a kite and Amir flies the kite for him just like the way Sohrab’s father used to do for Amir. The story ends with Amir cutting the opponent’s kite and running for the severed kite just like the way his brother Hassan, used to do for him.

Pros: A great emotional story of live of two happy kids from different social strata, transformed into a tragedy for no fault of theirs. A story which shows how millions of lives have tragic endings due to an unexpected turmoil in the form of constant war, killings of the innocents and suffering of the survivors. Lucky were the one who were dead and dilapidated were the lives of the left behind. A highly emotional writing with apt usage of classic prose that will leave no reader tearless while reading this book. I would recommend this book to every reader to know how some lives end up in tragedy simply for no fault of theirs. I appreciate the author’s talent in highlighting the Afghan culture and tradition in the most desirable way.

Cons: Child abuse was the point I hated to read in this book. Though this was the most disturbing fact of the day and ever growing menace in today’s world, I could not stand the way Hassan and his son were abused sexually by the upper caste during their childhood days. How can one do it to a kid? Disgusting!!! No wonder such kids will grow with extremist ideas and replicate the same after they grow up, inculcating the mindset of violence in their behavior..

interesting start

This one was good.. short but good.. only issue I do have is that she is very stuck on him being her brother, so it makes the book feel a bit.... weird for me. I understand he is in love with her and I do believe she is in love with him.. but she needs to get past the "brother" thing if she wants it to work. Overall I enjoyed it and will read the others to find out what happens

Nice start to the series

I was surprised by this. The quick get together worked here and I think it's because of the shifter element. There was enough history for me between the characters to set it up and there was some nice chemistry.

I can't wait to read the next two to find out what happens between Ben and Holly.

This was a pretty good story. Moves along very quickly, but it tells a lot of back story which I liked. The only thing keeping me from giving It five stars was how Ben kept taking advantage of Holly. She was not a very strong character. There is really not a story line, just a reunion. Happy reading.

Pope lite, and not at all bad

"Rules, and Truth, and Order, Dunces strike;
Of Arts, and Virtues, enemies alike.
... Ultimately, then, Harte seemed aware that the dunces pose a colossal threat, a threat which warrants Pope's numerous echoes of Paradise Lost. Harte's Essay, in fact, contains several echoes of the same poem. Though, like most of Pope's, these Miltonic echoes are given a comic turn which indicates a wide gap between the real satanic host and its London auxiliary, there is little doubt that Harte grasped the underlying seriousness of his mentor's analogies and his own."

Like Blackmore's Essay upon Wit, this comes to Kindle via the Augustan Reprint Society. It is an essay in verse, by a hanger-on of Pope's, with a translation of the French poet Boileau's defense of the use of proper names in satire, which the editor tenuously suggests may be Pope's own veiled self-defense (although, oddly enough, he does not use the term "sock puppet").

The poem, which I call "Pope lite," is actually very good, especially if you have a taste for the heoic couplet:

The charms of Parody, like those of Wit,
If well contrasted, never fail to hit;
One half in light, and one in darkness drest,
(For contraries oppos'd still shine the best.)
When a cold Page half breaks the Writer's heart,
By this it warms, and brightens into Art.

"Foe to the Learn'd, the Virtuous, and the Sage,
A Pimp in Youth, an Atheist in old Age:
Now plung'd in Bawdry and substantial Lyes,
Now dab'ling in ungodly Theories;
But so, as Swallows skim the pleasing flood,
Grows giddy, but ne'er drinks to do him good:
Alike resolv'd to flatter, or to cheat,
Nay worship Onions, if they cry, come eat:

Yet these love Verse, as Croaking comforts Frogs,
And Mire and Ordure are the Heav'n of Hogs.

Some write for Glory, but the Phantom fades;
Some write as Party, or as Spleen invades;
A third, because his Father was well read,
And Murd'rer-like, calls Blushes from the dead.
Yet all for Morals and for Arts contend----
They want'em both, who never prais'd a Friend.
More ill, than dull; For pure stupidity
Was ne'er a crime in honest Banks, or me."

I see what it is that troubles them; they have no mind to be undeceiv'd. It vexes them to have seriously admir'd those Works, which my Satires have expos'd to universal Contempt; and to see themselves condemn'd, to forget in their old Age, those Verses which they got by heart in their Youth, as Master-pieces of Wit. Truly I am sorry for 'em, but where's the help? Can they expect, that to comply with their particular Taste, we should renounce common Sense? applaud indifferently all the Impertinencies which a Coxcomb shall think fit to throw upon paper? and instead of condemning bad Poets (as they did in certain Countries) to lick out their Writings with their own Tongue, shall Books become for the future inviolable Sanctuaries, where all Blockheads shall be made free Denizens, not to be touch'd without Profanation? I could say much more on this subject; but as I have already treated it in my ninth Satire, I shall thither refer the Reader."

This is the second part of a major theoretical work by Patrik Schumacher, which outlines how the discipline of architecture should be understood as its own distinct system of communication. Autopoeisis comes from the Greek and means literally self-production; it was first adopted in biology in the 1970s to describe the essential characteristics of life as a circular self-organizing system and has since been transposed into a theory of social systems. This new approach offers architecture an arsenal of general comparative concepts. It allows architecture to be understood as a distinct discipline, which can be analyzed in elaborate detail while at the same time offering insightful comparisons with other subject areas, such as art, science and political discourse. On the basis of such comparisons the book insists on the necessity of disciplinary autonomy and argues for a sharp demarcation of design from both art and engineering. Schumacher accordingly argues controversially that design as a discipline has its own sui generis intelligence – with its own internal logic, reach and limitations.

Whereas the first volume provides the theoretical groundwork for Schumacher’s ideas – focusing on architecture as an autopoeitic system, with its own theory, history, medium and its unique societal function – the second volume addresses the specific, contemporary challenges and tasks that architecture faces. It formulates these tasks, looking specifically at how architecture is seeking to organize and articulate the complexity of post-fordist network society. The volume explicitly addresses how current architecture can upgrade its design methodology in the face of an increasingly demanding task environment, characterized by both complexity and novelty. Architecture’s specific role within contemporary society is explained and its relationship to politics is clarified. Finally, the new, global style of Parametricism is introduced and theoretically grounded.

It is well-known that the challenges of military combat can extend far beyond the battlefield. The overall goal is to help individuals dealing with the widest range of combat stress issues to regain maximum operational fitness and health as soon as possible. Avoiding psychological jargon, the author does not spend time exploring complex theories of why combat stress occurs. Instead he focuses on ‘what works’, providing the most effective advice for those who experience combat stress, their loved ones and those who help them professionally.

By promoting early intervention and a solution-focused approach, Beating Combat Stress equips active and returning troops, combat veterans and the professionals who help them with the means to defeat the enemy within, and to achieve a renewed sense of direction and purpose in life.

About the Author

Patrik Schumacher is partner at Zaha Hadid Architects. He joined Zaha Hadid in 1988. In 1996 he founded the ‘Design Research Laboratory’ with Brett Steele at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, and continues to serve as its co-director. He studied philosophy and architecture in Bonn, Stuttgart and London. In 1999 he completed his PHD at the Institute for Cultural Science, Klagenfurt University. His contribution to the discourse of contemporary architecture is also evident in his prior writings (Digital Hadid, London 2004) as well as in his work as a curator (Latent Utopias, Graz 2002). Currently he is working on an exhibition showcasing Parametricism.

The Autopoiesis of Architecture is a spectacular intellectual achievement, and a very rare elaboration of a systematic, comprehensive, and unified theory for contemporary architecture. The writing is remarkably clear and accessible, while at the same time elegantly complex and distinctly articulate. This is a highly instrumental work that is immediately actionable for architects and designers in both analytical and generative contexts, cohering, connecting and ordering a huge network of complex discursive, professional and academic threads. It leaves no stone unturned, and is equally inspiring for seasoned professionals as it is for emerging practitioners and young students. The first volume is a comprehensive discourse analysis that constructs a rigorous, systematic framework for productive discursive differentiation, debate and evolution. The second volume systematically elaborates a comprehensive new agenda for architecture, culminating in a lucid reflection/projection on Parametricism, the contemporary style of architecture that emerged globally and evolved exponentially since the mid-1990s, across professional practices, design research collaboratives and schools worldwide, in response to the emergence of a global, functionally differentiated post-Fordist network society in the crisis and eventual collapse of Modernism in the late 1970s.
