Although sophisticated mathematical models and phy- cal theories are the basic tools behind the conceptual foundations and a- lytical implementation of these modem techniques, to the best of our knowledge no effort was made to formalize the actual knowledge about brain function into a coherent theoretical framework incorporating the - cent developments in mathematical and physical science. Addressing this lack was our first motivation in writing this book.

We have been given a one-sided view of history, but to balance that view I would start with John G. Jackson's book. If we understand the tree, seed and flowers began in Africa and we make the effort to return and sit at the root of that intellectual tree,we will not only increase our knowledge of the past, but the present and future of all mankind. African History is World History.

This is a fabulous, logical, rational guidebook for improving one's life and getting rid of addictive behavior. The chapters are organized according to a 4-Point Program called SMART Recovery®, which has a lot of information online. This handbook puts most of the fundamental information in one place, in a logical order. After an intro, there are chapters on Motivation, Dealing with Urges and Cravings, addressing unhelpful thinking (REBT/CBT), and creating a life with purpose.

The Handbook is also a workbook, with exercises on Cost Benefit Analysis of one's problematic behavior, creating a Change Plan, taking a look at one's Values, etc. These exercises help the individual see a bigger picture so they can move life along to be more aligned with their chosen values.

The SMART Handbook is based on scientific research that has been done regarding the Stages of Change, Motivational Interviewing, the effectiveness of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and more. SMART bases its program on these proven, effective methods to help people change. The SMART thinking is that we do things for a reason, and we do have power to improve our lives. The Handbook is not only useful for changing addictive behavior, but once a person is familiar with the methods, it becomes natural to apply cost/benefit thinking and rational questioning, etc, to the rest of one's life. The best introduction to India I've ever read

I've read many books on India, all very interesting, but I wish I'd read this book first. It grounds the reader in the physical and geographical realities of the Indian landscape, all the while exploring the roots of Indian culture. The maps that accompany the text are invaluable. It took this book to make me realize that Delhi is not a port city, but is located on the high middle plateau, not far from the mountains that define India's northern border. The ancient cities of Mohenjo Daro and Harappa are closer to Kandahar and Kabul than they are to Calcutta.

Geography is destiny on the subcontinent of India. It could be argued that even the caste system developed from the complexities of its geography. Invaders had to pass through its high mountain passes to the north, or come from the sea. Once settled, their descendents were trapped in their own corner of India by her mountains, deserts, and rivers, and the population of the subcontinent splintered into a thousand different cultures, and eventually, castes. The author states that "in India--perhaps because an enormous number of dissimilar peoples had to find a way to live together--separate coexistence, not merger, became the clue to survival."

This book begins with the civilizations of the Indus Valley in the Second Millennium B.C. and ends with the decline of the Mughal Empire and the establishment of European trading colonies in the 18th century A.D. The development of Hinduism and its influence on Islam (and vice versa) is an ongoing theme throughout this book. The enormous pomp and splendor of the emperor's court is balanced against the search for enlightenment.

"By an odd coincidence in history, the Sixth Century B.C. was a century of remarkable intellectual discovery for nearly every ancient civilization." India became a center of religious ferment out of which both Jainism and Buddhism came into existence.

In spite of the emphasis on culture and religion, the historical thread is not neglected and comes alive through the men who managed to unite the different subcultures of India. From the time of the Mauryas, who created India's first great empire in the Third Century B.C. through the Mughal dynasty, founded by Babur in the Sixteenth Century A.D., the text and splendid illustrations of this book tell the story of politics and society in historic India.

I don't think we Westerners can find a better introduction to this mysterious subcontinent. I am definitely going to search out more books in this Time-Life series of the "Great Ages of Man."

Excellent Book On Pre and Post Contact Mesoamerican Trade

Like the other book I reviewed today, this book is the only book I could find on this subject, which I articulated as, "What was trade like before the Spanish arrived in the New World?" Specifically, I was interested in seeing the extent of trade between the Valley of Mexico and the Mayan speaking areas to the South. This book doesn't really explore that topic, but it's quite definitive on the question of trade before, during and after the Spanish conquered the Aztecs and surrounding areas.

Along the way Hassig corrects what are some still common misconceptions about the relationship between the Spanish and Mesoamerica. The most interesting misconception that Hassig tackles is the idea that the Aztec Empire was somehow weak or defective, and that the weakness was intimately related to the conquest.

Hassig examines the pre-Columbian history of the Aztecs and argue, persuasively, that the Aztecs were a hegemonic, rather then territorial empire. Roughly put, it's the difference between the Roman Empire and the British Monarchy- with the Aztecs being Roman. The Aztec Empire was what you call a low energy/low extraction Empire- the Aztecs required less from it's subjects and in turn expended fewer resources in maintaining their Empire.

This "choice" was grounded in pre existing conditions in Mesoamerica: the geography, the lack of pack animals and reliance on human transportation and the need for the Aztecs to secure their food supply in an area where any growth in a city was cause for concern. The Aztecs were aided in their ascent by their prime position inside a cluster of lakes. The only transportation alternative for the Aztecs besides people were canoes, and the canoes could carry 50 times a human. Because the Aztecs were inside a lake, they were able to extend their economic "hinterland" from any point in the water surface. This allowed them to grow larger then competitors effectively by their combined military/location advantage.

As they expanded they used merchants as advance scouts and spies. After the Conquest, the combined impact of disease and new transportation alternatives (Donkeys and wagons) the use of human carriers declined but did not stop entirely for more then a century. Hassig notes that the impact of disease preceded the Spanish conquest, so that their conquest was timed at a point when there were relatively few children (already dead from disease) and more adults (more productive, fewer family members to support) so that in the years immediately after the conquest there was relative abundance.

However, as that first disease stuck generation aged, there were fewer workers and thus it was harder for the Spanish to "live off the land" per their desire.

About the Author
Charles I. Jones is the STANCO Professor of Economics at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. He is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He received his Ph.D. from MIT in 1993. He is well known for his research and papers on long-run economic growth. Jones is equally well known as an educator with a gift for distilling complicated subjects down to their essence and making them accessible to all levels of students. He is the author of Introduction to Economic Growth, Third Edition (2013).

Dietrich Vollrath (Ph.D. Brown, 2005) is Associate Professor (with tenure) of Economics at the University of Houston. He is an up-and-coming scholar in long-run economic growth.

About the Author

Tad Williams is the bestselling author of the Memory, Sorrow & Thorn series, the Otherland series, and the Shadowmarch series. He has also written several other novels, such as Tailchaser’s Song, The War of the Flowers, and The Dragons of Ordinary Farm, which was co-written with his wife, Deborah Beale. His short fiction has appeared in such venues as Weird Tales, The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, and in the anthologies Legends and Legends II. A collection of his short work, Rite, was released in 2006. He has also written for D.C. Comics, first with the miniseries The Next, and then doing a stint on Aquaman.

New OTHERLAND/OZ story

"The Boy Detective of Oz" is Tad Williams' second OTHERLAND story (following "The Happiest Dead Boy in the World", 2003) that deals with the future adventures of Orlando Gardiner, the eponymous dead boy, who is now the quasi-immortal ranger of the OTHERLAND network. These stories follow the events of the four main OTHERLAND novels, and while no knowledge of the books is strictly necessary, both stories are certainly much more fun if they are read after the novels.

This time Orlando has to deal with something that looks like a murder (the deceased is not actually completely dead, although he lacks his head), but the mysterious almost-death of the Royal Policeman of Kansas is not the only mystery in the Kansas/Oz simworld, because there is unrest in the otherwise peaceful and idyllic simworld. And civil war threatens---

The story is a wonderful return to OTHERLAND and I hope that Tad Williams will write more of Orlandos adventures. It is a great, fun story, especially for readers familiar with OTHERLAND. I suppose it is somewhat less succesfull as a stand-alone OZ story, but readers looking for a new OTHERLAND fix will be delighted.

I'll start by saying that the novels this story birthed from, The Otherland Series, are possibly my favorite novels of all time. So needless to say I was ecstatic to have the opportunity to once again return to the digital world of Otherland!

When I first read Otherland I was excited each time the characters would find themselves in different digital simulations, from ancient Egypt and Alice in Wonderland, to more completely unique realms in the book and especially Oz.

I just can't say enough about Tad Williams' ability to create a unique and fascinating world and story and then fully transport his readers into that place. He is possibly my favorite author of all time, and if you have not read him yet, then I would make one of his books the first one you read. I would start with is Otherland series if he is new to you, and then definitely come here and pick up this book as the cherry to top off your Otherland collection.

That being said, this is a very well written work and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The glass cat was witty and enjoyable and Orlando {The Boy Detective of Oz} was just as enjoyable as he was during my highly enjoyable read of the Otherland Series years ago. I was not let down at any moment and loved the twist at the end of the story. I won't be heading on to other works in this Oz series by different authors from here, but if you like Tad, or think you want to give a great author a read, then I just can't suggest this book and all of his other books enough!

Have a wonderful day! Do yourself a favor and pick this or one of his other books up. You'll be hooked on Tad for years to come.

Impeccable - A Journey to a Beloved Land

I am a huge fan of Tad Williams' "Otherland" series. In my opinion, books just don't get any better than that. So when I heard that "Oz Reimagined: The Boy Detective of Oz" existed, I dropped what I was doing to pick it up. I wasn't disappointed with what I found! While it's only a short story (damn you, Mr. Williams, for not giving us MORE OTHERLAND!), it's both a fun and poignant one. We get to check in on one of my favorite characters and what he's up to since the events of the Otherland series occurred. It seems he's putting his immortality to good use, but there's a melancholy about him, too, that reminds me of how very sad I was when his fate was sealed in the other books.

I can't tell you how happy I was to check back in on Orlando Gardiner, not to mention the new Oz/Kansas! Great writing from Tad and I hope to see more from the Otherland-verse, even if they are short stories!

In jargon-laden prose, Dally, a retired psychiatrist living in England, explains that Woolf's difficult childhood and youthAmarked by the death of her motherAlay the chemical and biological groundwork for her later mental illness. This forensic inquiry is possible only because Woolf, a faithful diarist, left "surely the fullest year-by-year record ever of the effect of the disease on a creative life." While interesting reading, this work adds little new insight into Woolf's troubled genius. Discussions of her literary works appear as asidesAor worse, as symptoms of her illness, a serious mistake given the psychological narrative techniques Woolf used so powerfully in novels such as To The Lighthouse and Mrs. Dalloway. Retired British psychiatrist Dally (The Fantasy Game, 1975) puts Woolf on the couch in this insubstantial psychobiography. Woolf's mental state has always attracted posthumous diagnoses from her literary biographers, and Dally, who has also essayed a psychological portrait of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, concentrates entirely on this ambiguous task. Woolf is customarily labeled manic depressivea term (no longer clinically employed) referring to a fairly loose category of mood disorders with a wide range of diagnoses. Dally specifies Woolf's malady as cyclothymic disorder, which presents as comparatively mild depression from January to March and again in September, and an elated mood in the summer. This condition, he argues, would lead to full-blown manic depression, manifested in Woolf's manic breakdowns and severe depressions, culminating in her 1941 suicide. Woolf's milder hypomanic phases featured brilliant conversation and ambitious literary projects. In her outright manic phases, however, she refused food; talked incessantly; grew paranoid; insulted everyone from her nurses to her husband, Leonard, and her sister, Vanessa; had suicidal impulses; and, in some instances, experienced visual and aural hallucinationsmost famously seeing her dead mother and hearing birds in London singing in Greek (a detail which found its way into Mrs. Dalloway). Unfortunately, Dally neglects the close examination of Woolf's mind in favor of rote summary of the events of her life, which reduces Leonard to the sort of helpmeet necessary for Woolf's condition. In an appendix, ``Manic, Madness and Creativity,'' Dally cursorily discusses the effects of her illness on her writing, but Woolf, who in her voluminous diary vividly described both her literary impulses and her fluctuating emotions, remains the authority on herself. Less a case study than a Cliff's Notes to better biographical work, such as Hermione Lee's rich treatment (Virginia Woolf: A Biography, 1997). About the Author
After qualifying from St. Thomas's Hospital in 1953, Peter Dally specialized in psychiatry and was consultant psychiatrist at the Westminster Hospital until his retirement. He lives in England.

Although a general psychiatrist, his professional outlook is eclectic and he has particular interests in manic depression and anorexia nervosa, a subject on which he has written several books. Virginia Woolf first aroused his interest when, as a student, he read Mrs. Dalloway. He subsequently became absorbed in her diaries, which give a wider and deeper picture of manic depression than any textbook could.

The Tragedy of Ignorance Concerning Manic Depression

I was window shoppping at Amazon.com as I often love to do when I came across a book that I have treasured for some time. I was dismayed to see that Peter Dally's magnificent tour de force was not being recognized as such. Frankly, it is beyond comprehension that this would be so! One cannot understand the scope and depth of Virginia Woolf without reference to the marriage to which she so desperately needed in order to achieve the balance and stability necessary (given her illness) which resulted in our watershed of wonder in having such Masterpieces to read and enjoy today! Also, Dally's most compassionate view of her bipolar disorder provides to anyone who has had real experience with this disease profound insight into a curse, really, for so many artists that surely would have resulted in her suicide far sooner had it not been for Leonard Woolf. Surely, he is not perfect. No one is. But Dally provides that all-important insight into the need for all of us to accept the fact that no man or woman is an island unto themselves and in the absence of another upon whom we can rely in times of trial and trouble -- we are all lost. Given the unimaginable low price for this book, if you love VW -- you will not be disappointed!

About the Author

If you collection militaria or have an interest in WW2 history and these type of units, you can't go wrong with any of these great reads. Excellent photos, descriptions, and history.
