Carving Miniature Duck Decoys

The book is a large sized book primarily designed to give minimal instructions for carving decoys of common ducks. This is NOT a "how to whittle" book by any means. The writer assumes that you know how to use a carving knife already. The pages are of rather heavy paper that can be cut out or the staples removed so that you can use them to make your own patterns to carve the birds. Which is fairly standard for many books of this type. I used a photocopyer to copy the patterns so that I did not destroy the book ( I have a phobia about destroying books! Too many readings of Ferenheit 451 as a child I guess) I started by carving a Mallard and a wood duck. The Mallard took only a few hours of whittling with my X-Acto to get to reasonable completion level. The scale is about right for hand sized carving. A pocket knife or X-acto is perfect. The only place the book "fails" for me is in the design of the coloration of the birds. I know little about wild birds and would like some bettter guidance in this respect, though he has included two paces of color plates of completed carvings and suggests that the reader research the birds in other books. Not a bad idea at that. If you are interested in carving, this is a pretty good way to start in with miniature decoys. For the more mercinary of you, in my travels last week, I saw a slightly larger decoy in a store priced at $125. Where's my carving knife?

Good book if you've carved a duck before.

This book is a good book only if you've carved a duck before because it does not tell you what kind of knife to use, also it does not tell you to draw the basic front and back of the duck on the botton as guide lines. If you want to start carving buy the book "How to carve wood". It tells you how to carve a antique duck very clear. It also tells you what tools you need, and even how to sharpen them. After you purchase the book how to carve wood, then buy this book carving miniature duck decoys for patterns, and better techniues. Even though carving minauture duck decoys has good techniques it does not explain basic info. Buy the standard B bo-t handcrafted knife from woodcraft.com that is the best knife for basic carving. I hope this review helped.

Within one week had two miniatures completed. I thought the scale was a bit small so I had the images enlarged 15% and redid the measurements. Will probably do both sizes. Better be able to carve and paint in order to take advantage of this book.

Gordon L Rottman entered the US Army in 1967, volunteered for Special Forces and completed training as a weapons specialist. He was assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group until reassigned to the 5th Special Forces Group in Vietnam in 1969-70. He is currently a civilian contract Special Operations Forces Intelligence Specialist at the Army's Joint Readiness Centre, Ft Polk.

A good overview - highly recommended!

For those who already have a small library of books on Vietnam Elite Forces and Militaria the names Gordon Rottman and Kevin Lyles are no strangers. To my knowledge this is the first time they have collaborated together and the result is as could be expected - excellent!
Given the many roles SF personnel conducted during the Vietnam conflict, their 'bread and butter' was the 'advisory' effort and consequently, this is what the book focuses on.
The text is well indexed, concise and clear - covering items such as organisation, training, life in the A-camps and the weapons utilised. The majority of photos are new and well chosen for their relevance to points in the text. Kevin Lyles' colour plates are superb - clean and well detailed - his intimate knowledge of the items involved are apparent (such as the highly 'technical' method of squeezing extra transmission range from a PRC-25/77 radio!). They also illustrate the closeness that SF soldiers had with their indigenous charges - my favourite colour plate depicting a light hearted mortar lesson!
My only criticisms of the book are in the order of nit-picking .. The 'SSGT' depicted in Plate 1 is quite obviously SF officer and legend, Ed Rybat - why not give him his due rank? Also, SF involvement in MACV-SOG was only alluded too - but in the space limitations of this particular publication this is understandable.
Incidentally the cover depicted on the amazon page was illustrated by Ron Volstad and most likely a pre-production cover - it is NOT the actual cover of the book I obtained.
In summary, a must have book for those researching the life and look of the SF soldier of the period. It brings together in a clear, concise way information that one would otherwise have to obtain from more expensive or out-of-print texts. An authoritative bibliography is also supplied for those interested in further reading. Although a short book, it is a worthy companion to those other excellent Rottman and Lyles titles adorning the bookshelf of the SF aficionado.

This a great read for anyone interested in the nuts and bolts of green beret operations in Vietnam. Anyone who is a student of history and/or particularly interested in Green Beret operations in Vietnam will find this book a good resource on the weapons they used, their organization, their fortifications and living quarters, and a glimpse into the mindset and overall experience of entering Army Special Forces and going into Vietnam.

What a Mistake

I bought this book by accidentally pressing the wrong button on my Kindle. I was actually in Agra at the time and was very disappointed with it. Its not worth the $43 and feels like its just the authors academic study. I doubt its going to sell much.

Recasting the term "indie" to denote a particular form of independent feature production that has risen to prominence in the twenty-first century, King identifies and discusses the new opportunities available to indie filmmakers. These new options and techniques include low-cost digital video and a range of Internet and social-media ventures providing funding, distribution, promotion, and sales. He also covers the ultra-low-budget "mumblecore" movement; the social realism of such filmmakers as Kelly Reichardt and Ramin Bahrani; the "digital desktop" aesthetics of Jonathan Caouette's Tarnation (2003) and Arin Crumley and Susan Buice's Four Eyed Monsters (2005); and the affect of certain dominant discourses, such as the articulation of notions of "true" indie film and its opposition to what some see as the quirky contrivances of crossover hits such as Little Miss Sunshine (2006) and Juno (2007). King ultimately locates a strong vein of continuity in indie practice, both industrially and in the textual qualities that define individual features.
