About the Author

Jean-Marc Spaggiari, an HBase contributor since 2012, works as an HBase specialist Solutions Architect for Cloudera to support Hadoop and HBase through technical support and consulting work. He has worked with some of the biggest HBase users in North America.

Jean-Marc’s prime role is to support HBase users over their HBase cluster deployments, upgrades, configuration and optimization, as well as to support them regarding HBase related application development. He is also a very active HBase community member, testing every release from performance and stability standpoints.
Prior to Cloudera, Jean-Marc worked as a Project Manager and as a Solution Architect for CGI and insurances companies. He has almost 20 years of Java development experience. In addition to regularly attending HBaseCon, he has spoken at various Hadoop User Group meetings and many conferences in North America, usually focusing on HBase related presentations and demonstration.

Kevin is currently a Field Engineer at Rocana where he works with customers to architect large-scale IT Operations. Prior to Rocana, Kevin worked at Cloudera for over four years where he interacted with numerous Fortune 500 companies across every vertical.

In addition, to his day to day at Rocana, Kevin works closely with the open source Apache community. He is a contributor on the Apache HBase project, has written numerous blog posts and presented at multiple conferences regarding the Hadoop ecosystem.

Terrific stuff!

This book covers it all. It explains massage from the beginning in simple terms anyone can follow. But it doesn't stop there. It goes into vast detail, explaining why and how. I felt like an expert after I read it. It is truly accessible for those of us who might feel like an idiot at the beginning. I always felt silly when it came to giving a back rub. But now I realize the history behind the practice of massage and the value it can give to me and my partner. Because of this book, I'm quickly becoming an expert!

A Fun and Informative Trip

This is an instructive and, dare I say it, entertaining map to the world of touch therapy. The authors take us through a wide range of massage topics, including techniques, history, philosophy and more, in easy to understand terms. The format of chapters, sidebars and summaries gives us the details while reminding us not to forget the essentials. Finally, in the text and graphics, the authors remember that a little levity makes the trip that much more enjoyable. I would recommend this book both to health care professionals and those just looking for a way to relax at the end of a day that has seemed like a week. Fine, fun work.

Idiots everywhere, rejoice! After finishing this excellent book, you too can give a massage! In this down-to-earth tome the reader is treated to the history, terminology and easy to follow techniques of massage. If you've ever had a desire to learn about, or give a massage, you owe it to yourself to check out this book. 2 thumbs (and all the other digits) UP for this great book.

About the Author

Dr. De Sellers began one of the earliest cognitive-based learning framework courses for American college students in 1973 at Texas State University, incorporating both emerging theory and research-based practice from numerous academic disciplines.  Although carrying administrative duties, including Dean of General Studies and Director of the Student Learning Assistance Center, she continued to teach the course for 25 years.  She holds both an M.A. and Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, with a focus on adult learners, from the University of Texas at Austin.  Currently she is president of Cerridwen, Inc., a counseling and educational consulting firm, and is a Licensed Professional Counselor with a specialty in pastoral counseling.    

 

Dr. Carol W. Dochen directs the Student Learning Assistance Center at Texas State University. In addition to her administrative duties, she has taught both the University’s learning framework course and first-year seminar course for more than 25 years. She is actively involved in state and national developmental education organizations and was a founding member of the annual statewide College Academic Support Programs (CASP) conference and the Texas Association for Developmental Education (TADE), of which she is a past president. She holds an M.Ed. in School Psychology from Texas State University and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration, with a minor in Educational Psychology, from the University of Texas at Austin.

 

Dr. Russ Hodges is an associate professor in the College of Education at Texas State University where he co-created and now teaches graduate courses in the new doctoral, master’s, and certificate programs in developmental education. Russ also coordinates the University’s learning framework course. Russ is currently serving his third term as chair of the Council of Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations (CLADEA). He is a past president and treasurer of the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). Russ also serves on the editorial boards for the Journal of Developmental Education and the Journal of College Reading and Learning. He holds a M.Ed. in Counseling from the University of Louisiana Monroe and an Ed.D. in Developmental Education from Grambling State University.

With this world turning on mostly misery, there is a need to have God in your life to help go thru life's trials and tribulations.
But what happens when couples come together for the purpose of marriage? Each bringing their own personal issues to form a holy union. Do you think counseling is necessary, or do you believe you can work your issues between yourselves?

Christian Fellowship Church has formed a new ministry for couples offering therapy for those who seek it. But the president of one of the church clubs has an ulterior motive for this ministry. When you want something for the wrong reasons, does that make it right ?

Four couples from different backgrounds, ethinicities, and ages find themselves testing the boundaries of their faith as they enter to find their way back to what brought them together in the beginning.

The characters and their problems were issues that plague couples today. Their stories were well developed and seamlessly written. Michelle Larks has given us a book that has something for everyone to learn from or relate to. Being recently married myself, and in an interracial relationship, the situations and issues these couples faced made me glad that we had counseling individually and together for the right reasons. Putting God in the center of our lives and our relationship, focusing on solving and not blaming, communicating and remembering the vows you took, can make a problem seem not so overwhelming. Nothing can remove the problems of life's journey, but I found that the counseling better prepares you for the pitfalls or situations that may arise and make the journey less rocky.

When it comes to matters of the heart, the only sin is turning your back on it, and not giving it a chance and not believing God can do anything but fail!

This was a great story about 4 couples with different issus that come together in a christian based therapy that is being offered by a church. I enjoyed reading about Meesha Morrison who is a christian whose husband is working long hours and is avoiding his family so Meesha comes up with the idea of her church having couples counseling. It was a great read and I highly recommend.

Therapy Changes Things

At Christian Fellowship Church couples are struggling with issues beyond their control in Couples Therapy by Michelle Larks. Four couples agree to attend couples therapy, a new program at the church. While attending therapy these couples find out their strengths and weaknesses.

Meesha Morrison has a hidden agenda and it is getting her husband, Edward, to join in the therapy she has already committed them to. Meesha is determine to save her marriage but Edward has other plans.

Kenneth and Beverly Howard are at odds over their son Amir. Beverly's constant condoling of Amir has caused a rift in her marriage. When Amir is arrested after a major event, Beverly has no choice but to open her eyes and see her situation for what it truly is.

Julia is having trouble accepting her new Caucasian daughter-in-law. Douglas is trying his best to help his wife through this time as well as being there for his son, Brandon, and daughter-in-law Erin. Julia and Douglas agree to join the couples therapy at their church to help them adjust to the new changes in their life.

Brandon and Erin Freeman is a young newlywed couple expecting their first child. It has been hard for the couple to adjust to being married while living in Brandon's parent's basement. Erin is trying her best to get her mother-in-law to like her to no avail. Erin becomes ill and has to be rushed to the hospital. The birth of this child will change the Freeman's life forever.

Couples therapy is about family, forgiveness, and faith. We can do all things through Christ and these four couples faith will be tested. The author does a wonderful job including issues and problems married couples are dealing with every day. This will help readers relate to the characters and will have them feeling every emotion these couples go through. After reading Couples Therapy, I am so glad my husband and I attending therapy before we got married to prevent ending in therapy after being married. Once again, Michelle Larks has written a compelling book that many can appreciate. I recommend this book to others.

Ortega y Gasset's "Mission of the University" is a classic work.
It should be on required reading list of any teacher hosting a class on the topic of education. It is insightful, incisive and prescient.
But it also it readabe. And the years have made it even more relevant. Don't miss it. And keep returning to it. And if you are a publisher, re-issue it.

THE SPANISH PHILOSOPHER POSES THIS QUESTION

José Ortega y Gasset (1883-1955) was a Spanish philosopher and essayist; he also wrote The Revolt of the Masses, What Is Philosophy?, An Interpretation of Universal History, History as a System and Other Essays Toward a Philosophy of History, Meditations on Quixote, etc.

He wrote in the introductory section of this 1930 book, “The Federación Universitaria Escolar of Madrid asked me to give a lecture on some topic related to the reforms of higher education. The very poor acoustics of the Paraninfo, however, prevented me from developing adequately the theme of my lecture. This circumstance prompted me afterward to rewrite somewhat more simply the notes I had taken with me… And here you have the result. It will be seen that except for an introduction… I have kept rigorously to what I consider the crucial question.”

In the first chapter, he states, “I say, then, that the circumstances offer a magnificent opportunity for a thorough reform of the Spanish state and university. But the reform of the one and of the other waits to be done by SOMEONE. Is there such a one in Spain today? By that I do not mean an individual, of course, one of those mythical creatures usually referred to, by a misapprehension, as a Great Man. History is not made by one man---however great he may be. History is not like a sonnet; nor is it a game of solitaire. It is made by many people: by groups of people endowed, collectively, with the necessary qualities.” (Pg. 17)

He observes, “Today, the societies in Europe are governed by the bourgeois classes, whose majority is composed of professional men. It is of the first importance to these societies, therefore, that these professional people, aside from their several professions, possess the power to make their lives a vital influence, in harmony with the height of their times. Hence it is imperative to set up once more, in the university, the teaching of the culture, the system of vital ideas, which the age has attained. This is the basic function of the university. This is what the university must be, above all else.” (Pg. 40)

He admits, “Have we answered our question, What is the mission of the university? By no means: we have only massed together what the university of today believes to be its business, and one thing which, in our judgment, it is not doing but must do. We have prepared the question: no more than that.” (Pg. 43)

He suggests, “The conclusion seems to me inescapable, that we must turn the present university upside down, so to speak, and stand it upon precisely the opposite principle. Instead of teaching what OUGHT to be taught, according to some utopian desire, we must teach only what CAN be taught; that is, what CAN BE LEARNED.” (Pg. 45)

He asserts, “The trend toward a university dominated by ‘inquiry’ has been disastrous. It has led to the elimination of the prime concern: culture. It has deflected attention from the problem of how to best train future professionals for their professions.” (Pg. 64)

He states, “We are passing at present… through an age of terrific UN-CULTURE. Never perhaps has the ordinary man been so far below his times and what they demand of him. Never has the civilized world so abounded in falsified, cheated lives. Almost nobody is poised squarely upon his proper and authentic place in life. Man is habituated to living on subterfuges with which he deceives himself, conjuring up around him a very simple and arbitrary world, in spite of the admonitions of an active conscience which forces him to observe that his real world, the world that corresponds to the whole of actuality, is one of enormous complexity and grim urgency. But… he is afraid to admit this real world, which would make great demands on him. He prefers to falsify his life, and keep it sealed up in the cocoon of his fictitious, oversimplified concept of the world.” (Pg. 74-75)

For anyone with an interest in the purpose and objectives of higher education, read some pages from the Spanish Philosopher of the early 1900s.
Accessible and highly intellectual (at the same time) this book is great for the philosophy student, or any grad student/future professor in any field.
It should be part of the modern debate over the purpose of the university: Should learning train the mind to think or act as mere training for the "real world?"
