About the Author

PAUL EGGEN

Paul has worked in higher education for thirty-eight years. He is a consultant for public schools and colleges in his university service area and has provided support to teachers in twelve different states. Paul has also worked with teachers in international schools in twenty-three countries, including Africa, South Asia, the Middle East, Central America, South America, and Europe. He has published several articles in national journals, is the co-author or co-editor of six other books, and presents regularly at national and international

conferences.

 

Paul is strongly committed to public education. His wife is a middle school teacher in a public school, and his two children are graduates of public schools and state universities.

 

 

 

DON KAUCHAK

Don has taught and worked in schools and in higher education in nine different states for thirty-five years. He has published in a number of scholarly journals, including the Journal of Educational Research, Journal of Teacher Education, Teaching and Teacher Education, Phi Delta Kappan, and Educational Leadership. In addition to this text, he has co-authored or co-edited six other books on education. He has also been a principal investigator on federal and state grants examining teacher development and evaluation practices, and he presents regularly at the American Educational Research Association. He currently volunteer-tutors first-, second-, and third-graders in a local elementary school.

 

Don strongly believes in the contribution that public schools make to our democracy, and his two children benefited greatly from their experiences in state-supported K–12

schools and public institutions of higher education.

Engaging and Exemplary Teaching Strategies!

As a experienced middle school teacher (120 12 and 13 year olds per day), I have long understood the need for active teaching strategies in my own classroom; strategies that will engage kids, keep them active, teach content and help them to improve their thinking skills. As a workshop provider and teacher trainer, I have also come to understand the hunger teachers have for such strategies in their classrooms.
Strategies for Teachers: Teaching Content and Thinking Skills by Paul D. Eggen and Donald P. Kauchak is an important resource for those teachers of all levels who wish to expand their repertoire of active teaching strategies, and for those education professors who wish to introduce future teachers to engaging and exemplary teaching strategies that have a strong theoretical and research base.
Moving from a discussion of information processing models of teaching, teacher effectiveness research, and active teaching, Eggen and Kauchak guide their readers through various strategies of teaching: inductive, concept-attainment, inquiry-based, and cooperative learning strategies. While stressing the importance of the constructivist teaching models, Eggen and Kauchak also acknowledge the need for direct instruction models of teaching and have an excellent chapter on the lecture-discussion strategy.

An overpriced, but useful, step-by-step “how-to” guide best suited for those seeking specific teaching prescriptions.

Strategies and Models for Teachers essentially is a detailed guidebook and on the basics of teaching, learning, thinking, and offers many different models of teaching that each have specific advantages in specific educational situations. After the basics are covered in the first part of the book, each chapter therein is dedicated to a specific teaching model and gives exquisite detail on how to implement them, their advantages and disadvantages, and how they relate to the development of critical thinking, cognitive development, and active learning. There are plenty of practical examples to help illustrate the authors’ points, and the study questions at the end of each chapter will help you to formalize your knowledge base and solidify your understanding. This book certainly is teacher-centered and lays out all the educational options, allowing the teacher to choose dependent on what suits him or her best.

I think those who are actively teaching and would like to read about fresh new delivery methods would benefit the most from this text.

Generally I felt this book was written in plain language and very easy to read, but I thought that the repeated use of vignettes was excessive and diverted attention away from the main point that was reached much later.

I used this book as part of a graduate-level course on teaching and agree with other reviewers that it is useful, but I fail to understand why it costs more than $100 (or even $25). I would highly recommend borrowing or renting this book if these options are available to you. With such a high price, you will not get a lot of bang for your buck.

An intimate portrait of a community searingly damaged by traditions, this is a densely imagined, beautiful and deeply troubling book written in heightened prose saturated with imagery. It casts a deep gaze on themes as timeless as love, nationalism and religion, while meditating on how these forces drive us apart.

Julie C. Ma served as Editor of Journal of Asian Mission. Currently she serves as Research Tutor of Missiology at Oxford Centre for Mission Studies, Oxford, UK. She also represented the world Pentecostal Church in the General Council of Edinburgh 2010. She is the author of four books and numerous academic articles. Wonsuk Ma served as Vice President of Academic Affairs of Asia Pacific Theological Seminary (1996-2006) and Editor of Asian Journal of Pentecostal Studies. Overall, the two volumes are completely engrossing, painstakingly researched and absolutely epic in scope.

Volume I may be a little much for the non-scholar/non-historian with the geographical and agricultural history of the Mediterranean. Braudel's work is detailed, thorough and touches every aspect of life (sheep pasturing, currency exchange, wheat prices by year). The copious footnotes reference primary sources and make for interesting reading in their own right. In this volume, Braudel sets down the foundation which volume II is built upon. Once cannot understand the impact of actions without knowing the history that drove the decisions.

Note: Many footnotes remain in the original Spanish or Italian.

Volume II, however, concentrates on Philip II's Spain and makes for engrossing reading. We see the Mediterranean World (and the "North Countries") through Spanish eyes. Her wars, diplomacy, failed policies, visionaries, religious convictions and economy are all covered in minute detail again with the same first-hand accounts referenced via footnotes.

I really can't do a credit to the breadth and depth of Braudel's work in this review. As an "armchair" history lover, I found this absolutely fascinating (and a bit intimidating at first pass). There can be some "dry" parts (the endless diplomatic dispatches and court speculation) but this is just minor quibbling from an amateur.

To see the various empires, wars and policies from a Spanish viewpoint was eye-opening. I found Braudel to be quite even-handed regarding the Spanish Empire and I have a new understanding of Philip's policies and his possible motivations.

In short, this is an exceedingly detailed, copiously noted expansive history of the Mediterranean during the reign of Philip II with excellent primary sources quoted.

Original in its approach, unsurpassed in its comprehensiveness, but somewhat dated in its details

First published in its complete form in 1949, then extensively revised in 1966 before being translated into English in 1972, Braudel's massive socio-economic history is, I can confidently assert, more often used today as a reference or cited for its information than read cover to cover. It's a daunting task: 1,300 tightly typeset pages that hold an encyclopedic mass of data, and it took me nearly a year to wing my way through it, dipping into it a couple of sections at a time, which is probably the only way for the nonspecialist to do it justice.

Braudel subverts the traditions of narrative events-focused history by examining everyday life in the civilizations surrounding (and traversing) the Mediterranean Sea. The boundaries of the Mediterranean are varied and flexible: the "conventional" borders drawn by the geographer stretch from "the northern limit of the olive tree to the northern limit of the palm tree," the geologist regards the region as "a long belt stretching from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean," but for Braudel it is more than the sum of these views: the Mediterranean is really a boundless region centered on a sea "whose light grows less as one moves away from it." Keeping this view in mind, Braudel expands his research to include far-away regions that impact the Mediterranean while never losing his focus on the interactions between the principal players; Spain, France, the Italian city-states and the Papacy, the Ottoman Empire and the Levant, and North Africa, as well as the islands whose destinies are often determined by the struggles among their continental neighbors.

This first volume includes all of Part One ("The Role of the Environment"), which examines regional geography (mountains, plains, coasts), climate, navigation and travel, and differences between urban and rural settings, and I found this examination both readable and absorbing. The first half of Part Two ("Collective Destinies and General Trends") focuses on economics: from general factors such as population commerce to mundane matters such as price fluctuations and coinage, the pepper and spice trade, grain imports and exports, and the use of ships for transport. Some of this stuff is pretty fascinating (especially the section on American silver), but even the most caffeinated readers can become hypnotized by the steady accumulation of data whose randomness is necessitated by whatever sources might have survived or been available to the author at the time.

More often than not Braudel points out areas that need further investigation, much of which has been carried out in the intervening decades by legions of economic historians. As a result, Braudel's history is a victim of its own success, and is read less and less largely because his influence has so completely permeated the field that more current, more accurate, more readable volumes exist covering this area and era--although no work on the late sixteenth century has dared to be as wide-reaching (and utterly overwhelming).

At its heart this is a socio-economic history of the second half of
the sixteenth century Mediterranean world that we owe so much too.
The authors depth & breadth of knowledge can be overwhelming at times, but never dull. The clever inclusion of the often ignored topics like climate and geographic conditions presuasively explained why prosperous Capitalism grew in some regions while others remained stagnant.
Chapter 5-"The Human Unit" was the most informative. Most facets of history are here for the reader to absorb. This is the type of book we all wished we had in school.

Humorous and informative but many typos

Great review on a wide variety of topics. The humor alleviates some of the tension associated with board reviews. I prefer this over Swanson's and Mometix which I've used in the past. 2 reasons I took away a star: 1. It was delivered the first week of October which is 3 months past the expected delivery date of mid-July 2. A lot of typos which is disappointing considering they had 3 extra months before delivering this edition.

Learn more about mammals

I find the Pocket Genius books to be perfect for the grab-and-go situation. For example, you know you will have to drive long distance with the kids in the car. Who likes a child who complains while driving for an extended period of time. I remember when I was about seven years old that my mom had packed a special basket for me as we drove to Florida. When we drove back home, the things in the basket were changed in order to entertain me. These books are perfect for this kind of situation because they are small, don't take a lot of space and contains educational information in them. They can be easily slip into a backpacks and will appeal even kids in middle school. These book contain facts and information on specific subjects that could be interesting for kids.

MAMMALS
Over 200 profiles of individual species as well as informative spreads on anatomy, behavior, and classification will be found in this title. However, it only covers a small fractions of all the mammals found on earth. But Pocket Genius: Mammals will look at humans, whales, wallabies, camels and more and their place in the natural world. It will explain their diet, how they defend themselves, their habitats and much more. It will present you egg-laying mammals as well as pouched and placental ones. They are easy to grand and go, they are informative, they cover specific subjects that would be interesting for kids, and they will encourage your kids to dig more on a specific subjects when they are done with it.

A must have for middle graders and for middle grade teachers!

This is definitely a must have book for middle graders, or a bit younger kids with mathematical skills and basic knowledge of how to use a computer. That said I don't see why older kids and even adults interesting creating own games and cartoons wouldn't enjoy this book. I did and I'm certainly not a kid anymore.

As a pre-school teacher I found this book fun, and interesting. Very easy to follow with detailed instructions, so kids can either use it alone or with an adult. This would be an excellent tool to use in schools or with the talented kids in pre-school or even as an extra home work, something to work with when you've finished your job and just waiting for the other students to catch up with you. I'm sure both boys and girls would love this and have so much fun while creating their own characters and letting their imagination fly!

Although the intended audience for this guide is middle grade, I think anyone interested in creating online games and cartoons would find this to be helpful.

You and your children can experience hours of fun experimenting and designing. Computer programming for kids can be a great learning experience using this book.
