Great read with clear practical tips for this introvert

This guide has some pretty clear guidelines that makes this worth a read. I myself have been known to not be assertive enough, been too "nice" to others, both in professional and personal relationships. And I wanted to find a way to change my behavior.

The beginning of the guide starts off with a quick self-assessment quiz to see if you are too "nice." The guide then dives into not just practical nuts and bolts of how to demand respect from others (in a reasonable fashion), but also change your inner mentality to gain some modicum of self-confidence and self-esteem.

Although the prose is brief, Preston's guide is succinct, concise, and to the point: this is a welcome fresh change for the harried information-overloaded reader. Give this a read at least twice to absorb the content.

More than I expected!

I was really happy with this Oz journal. The quality was better than expected and the quotes scattered throughout the pages were adorable. The quotes also say which books they are from and makes me want to purchase some of those books so I can read more. I am not a huge fan of the Wizard of Oz, but love the journal for its authentic quality in images. I am very happy with my purchase

Nice wi rebound journal with hard cover...so it's easy to lay flat when writing. Great graphics and design, nice smooth good quality paper....nicely spaced lines, cream colored paper, little quotes and graphics on the bottom corner of some of the pages. Very sweet journal.

The seller that I got mine from was named LINDA SUNSHINE and she is a FANTASTIC seller. Great speed and great wrapping, which is wonderful in an independent seller......

Small but mighty.

[[VIDEOID:mo1JP6IN6XEB36]]This book is small. It measures 7 1/4 by 10 3/4 inches. Just be warned.
But it is a very cool little package overall. It features four different artist that some of you might have heard of.

First is Artgerm (Stanley Lau) who is the artist featured on the front cover of the book. I like his urban style. Check out the Adidas outfit the lady on the front cover is wearing.

Second is MHK (Xiang Chen) who's style is 'moe'. Lot's of cute girls. Cute girls kicking butt. I like the one with the cute girl getting ready to deal the final blow against her mechanical octopuss foe. Nice.

The third artist is Noah (Hong Kuang) who I would describe as a more colorful H.R. Giger. Mutated women blended with trees and such, minus the wierd baby stuff that Giger does. The most un-anime style in this collection.

The fourth and final artist is Noho (Hye-Young Choi) who's digital art work looks hand painted. The monster characters look like something straight out of a Final Fantasy game.

All in all a nice little book. It gets four stars because it is small and short as well, but I still don't regret buying it.

Don't be mislead by the cover. This is an artbook. Not an ecchi/sexy anime girl book. Many of the pictures are not anime or manga. If you're looking for an ecchi book I recommend Flamboyant. The illustrations in this book are nice, but I wouldn't have spent $20 on this book had I known what was inside. Wait until the price drops. I wasn't very impressed. This was a book I wish I could have just borrowed from the library for a week.

About the Author
Eleanor Curtis is a London-based writer and photographer whose work has featured in UK and international broadsheets and journals. She is a graduate of the University of Sussex and has been a research fellow at the Royal College of Art, London. She has published three books with Wiley-Academy: Hotel Interior Structures (2001/2003), School Builders and Club Culture (2003).

Howard Watson is a writer and editor specialising in the arts and culture. He has contributed to many publications, including The Independent and Architectural Design, and edited a wide range of titles on architecture and the arts. He is also the author of The Design Mix (2006), Hotel Revolution and Bar Style (both 2005), for John Wiley & Sons Ltd.

About the Author

Miles Orvell is Professor of English and American Studies, with a broad interest in modern American culture, at Temple University. His other publications include 'The Real Thing: Imitation and Authenticity in American Culture 1880-1940', which was co-winner of the American Studies Association's John Hope Franklin Prize, and his essays and reviews have appeared in many journals, such as American Art and History of Photography. He is also the Senior Editor of the Encyclopedia of American Studies, and is the Director of American Studies program at Temple.

Wish I hadn't bought it.

I wish I hadn't purchased this. It is a photography version of what a friend of mine used to call "suicide music"--so dark and depressing that it makes you want to kill yourself. The photographers and the images selected come from a strain of American culture that is nihilistic and self-loathing. Robert Frank's work, although certainly very influential and quite interesting in terms of composition, focus on ordinary life, etc., is of this strain. My problem with it is perhaps exemplified by the person of Jack Kerouac, who wrote the text for Frank's The Americans. Kerouac drank himself to death at the age of 47. I am not sure that someone whose life is lived like that has an understanding or a view of life that can inform me or that I need to study, and that is how I feel about most of the photographers who are focused on in this book. Joel Peter Witkins' photographs of a severed, autopsied head split in two, the two sides facing each other? Really? I don't think anyone reads Kerouac any more, and I don't think that many of the 20th century photographers focused on here have worn well over even a short period of time. Looking at their pictures makes me less of a human being and darkens my view of human possibility. There are many other American photographers and photographs that are given short shrift here and whose view of life would have balanced the emotional and psychological emptiness of this book.

A final note and a fellow reader's concurring review. The copy I had was a used copy that had been owned by a student in a course. The book had obviously been dutifully read because it was highlighted throughout. On one page the student had written in pencil his or her own review: "I hate this sh*t". I know how she or he felt.

Worthless index!

I found the book to be impressive in its breadth and depth of content. However, I consider a book, especially of this size and scope, that has a poor or nonexistent index to be inexcusable and of limited value. While this book has an "index", i.e., a list of index entries, there are no page numbers or other links into the text. In short, it was useless! I couldn't believe any respectable publisher would ever allow that -- really bush league.

Very informative, especially regarding photography's role in documenting the social issues of America throughout her history. Without photography the development of America would have been completely different; Americans view, and understanding, of their own country and the events unfolding in their history was enhanced by the work of the work of these dedicated and imaginative people.
