The story ends with his recapture in the Warsaw Uprising of 1944 and deportation to a camp in Vienna, where, after another escape, he was liberated by the Soviet Army.

Hiding in the Open, Neumark

This unusual and gripping memoir is not a "Holocaust story" about the horrors of death camps. Instead, it treads a lesser-known path, in which the Holocaust, through the courage and ingenuity of an exceptional young man, is evaded. It is a story of his escape and survival on the "Aryan side," of a constant fear of discovery while blending with the local population and "hiding" behind a false identity. It is a story of a teenager's sound, mature decisions under pressure; of daring and the taking of calculated risks; and of extraordinary coincidences and luck.

The story is peopled with a variety of characters: blackmailers threatening disclosure; ordinary people willing to risk their lives to provide shelter and food to a fugitive; resistance fighters, both Jewish and Polish; and Nazi police in their menacing uniforms.

This unique and amazing true story has all the elements of outstanding fiction: brilliant writing, interesting characters and insight into the human character and condition. I couldn't put it down.

paradoxes of good friendships in evil times

"Hiding in the Open," by Zenon Neumark is a marvel of a book to read. Important historical information and insight is presented in an amazingly readable, suspenseful coming-of-age story. We have the rare, detailed and perceptive precision of a scientist who, while presenting horrendous portraits of the Nazi character in the occupation of Poland and Austria, nevertheless writes with an adventure-story momentum. Somehow the positive, the paradoxes of the good amidst incredible evil, take precedence: the many wonderful friendships, support groups and casual and clandestine helpers and sympathizers that made possible the courageous escapes from the brutal Nazi forces, from the betrayers, and from the many other unsavory elements of humanity.

What fun to learn of the antiquated methods of preserving ice from the winter pond for use in the summer, to learn of the day to day details of life under Nazi occupation, to visualize the liberating arrival of the Russians in Vienna, and even to understand a few adages in German, Polish and Russian! (" A thief's hat glows.")

Along with "The Pianist," the "Suite Francaise," and other recent narratives, we have additional pieces of the historical puzzle filled in. This rare account is a fortunate gift for the world. Thank you Zenon Neumark

Book that fails epically

I was excited when I bought the book as this is the second book in my collection that talks about hacking the ICS world. I decided to start reading as soon as I arrived. I was hoping for it to give intrinsic details about hacking ICS devices, specific ICS exploits, etc. However after reading it completely I am extremely sorry to say that the book does not at all live it to its expectations.

It seems over the time Hacking Book's series have started loosing its charm. I expected the books to be filled with new knowledge and helping people learn new things that can add to a person's knowledge, however the book is nothing but a glorified sell up gig that promises to give new knowledge but fails on delivering it.

For e.g. the authors have spent time explaining how to find vulnerabilities in ICS devices by using fuzzing, static analysis methods, etc however have not provided a detailed example of how one of the actual ICS devices can be hacked. Also when talking about memory corruption issues in their chapter, they have given example of custom written test programs demonstrating these vulnerabilities. Why wont I just spend time looking at free tutorials on other software examples that people post online in that case? For a book that promised to be full of new wisdom, it was an extreme disappointment.

There are definitely other books out there that are much better suited for anyone who is looking for detailed pentesting guides for hacking scada and ICS devices.

A missed opportunity and not offering what it promises in the title.

Really don't know how to judge this book, if you buy it because you want to learn more off then problem it is a book full of information. However mainly fragments, little organization and most of all not much to do with the title of the book. It is clear from the content and how they describe it that the authors have very little experience with automation systems and the manufacturing process in general. If you want to learn how to perform a pentest on an automation system, the book is of no value for you. If you want to learn how to protect the automation systems in the manufacturing environment, likewise the book will not help you because it doesn't offer structure. As so many books in this field it is a compilation of already published information, if you have time and some basic google search skills 90% of the content is easily recovered. So it saves time to collect the information, but it lacks the structure needed. This together with the bad drawings (even in my Kindle version where I can scale the diagrams) and the price to pay I suggest it is not worth the money.

Do not fear reading the manual. It's really OK.

Imagine this....
Congratulations! You are the new CISO of the process control environment for a major energy/oil & gas operator. After many years of rotating through the various leadership programs within your company (they even let you in the computer room a few times) you have finally received the keys to the kingdom, to perhaps the most neglected network enabled infrastructure and systems within the company. After your last major successful rotation where you were responsible for implementation of patch management program across all your Windows servers - you know you have the skills to get this process control environment secure and protected from the forces of evil (and the accidental USB malware introduction)

Unfortunately, unlike the data center you used to work in, the equipment is distributed all over the place. This will make getting a good inventory tough. No worries, your buddy loaned you NESSUS and you'll get it all figured out (that Kali and NMAP thing is too confusing). Let the NESSUS-ing begin! 12 hours later... Ops! During your NESSUS scan some of these embedded computer thingy's stopped responding even that Windows XP box (What's that here for?). The result was an unplanned shutdown of an off shore asset that resulted in loss of product around 150,000 barrels per day. Good thing we got the plant running again within a day or two!

Being the savvy leader you are, you've decided to transfer some of this risk and have some consultants come in to do an assessment. 250K USD and two weeks later (how do they write these reports so fast?) you are given a report that looks pretty much like the one you saw 18 months ago when a different consultancy did an assessment on a different asset on the other side of the world. Although these "Practice Leads" who wrote the report use some pretty cool really big words, it still doesn't help you figure out what really needs to get done to get a proper IACS cyber security program implemented. Well, at least the plant didn't trip this time!"

Back to the real world.
I wish I could say the behavior demonstrated by the fearless leader mentioned above was pure fiction, but it's not. The scenarios mentioned above are just a few of what happens far too often. These mistakes can easily be avoided by first taking some time to learn about process control and industrial automation and control system (IACS) environments. I'm not suggesting you have to read everything on SIS, VFD, ICSS, DCS, etc... but find a good resource that provides gives enough detail so you can understand the big differences between enterprise IT and operations technology. This book, along with a few others out there, are a good place to start.

This book have been available on SafariBooks and Google Play for about a week now. 5 stars is a pretty glowing review. What really justifies this is the quality of the writing (not your typical cyber security savant's trying to impress with big words) and the amount of meaningful content covered within the pages. Of course it does not cover EVERYTHING, for example I don't recall OPC being discussed in the protocols section. It is not a replacement for things like ICS 410. It will not get you over the finish line if you use this as a sole source to study for GICSP. In all fairness, the authors do not claim such objectives.

This book is very useful to many audiences.

Managers and Leaders: Good coverage of key phases of IACS program development and sustainment. Outstanding list of industry standards that should be used as the foundation of your program.

OEMs/Developers: Read the whole thing. Pay special attention to the section on ICS Malware (section 8). Please don't consider a product to have achieved "Minimal Viability" without taking some precautions in the architecture and code. Build security in. Make it a priority within your "Scrums".

CEOs/Marketing: Read the note regarding the "Industrial Internet of Things". It will sound pretty much like what your experienced systems engineers have been telling you... they really aren't crazy.

I&C Techs/Engineers. You know your environment better than anyone. As the IT experts begun to show up to help you, use the content within this book to keep them from using your environment as their learning lab.

No single book on IACS cyber security will provide you the answers. There's at least 3 or 4 IACS cyber security specific books that anybody working in this environment should have. This one is certainly worth having.

Easy to understand with delicous recipes

It is obvious when reading the introduction to Kidney Health Gourmet that the author has a wealth of experience in counseling people with kidney disease. She takes a complicated diet and explains it in an easy to read and personable manner. You feel like you are talking to your own personal dietitian. The recipes are simple and delicious. I especially like the Shrimp Scampi Greek Style. As a dietitian myself I think this is a valuable diet guide and cookbook for people with kidney disease who are not on dialysis.

not very good

it claims to be for kidney health, but a number of things in it are in exact opposite of what I am being told by doctors and others with PKD. and there are some very unhealthy for anyone items listed in it. I cannot respect her as an authority on the subject after going through the book.

chocolate, tea and coffee are hard on the kidneys. only people without kidney disease should use any of those items. for that matter, it is said that Rosemary is also to hard on the kidneys.

many of the recipes have large amounts of sodium in them. some of the recipes call for processed foods which are always excessively high in sodium. some recipes call for processed foods that have chemicals in them no-one should eat-fake whipped cream has plastics and solvents in them.

recipes that should have the healthy (ie salt free, etc.) product in them, do not. butter is called for, not salt free butter. Splenda, a known ant killer, is called for instead of Stevia or cane sugar. cane sugar isn't good for diabetics, but my diabetic husband started losing weight he had not been able to lose when I took him off of Splenda and put him on Stevia.

I wouldn't recommend this book. it is not condusive to staying off of dialysis, which is what I MUST do. off to find a far better cook book.

Great resource for those of us living (well) with CKD

I was so thrilled to find this little gem, I bought three copies - one for me, and two to share with friends who are at risk of serious kidney disease. The first section of the book summarizes in plain English the special dietary issues that confront patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD), with tips about how to eat for health. This is followed by a collection of delicious recipes to help a person with CKD get started on a healthier path without sacrificing family and social life. I couldn't wait to get started!

About the Author
W. Bruce Allen (Ph.D., Economics, Northwestern University) is Professor of Business and Public Policy at the Wharton School of Business, the University of Pennsylvania. For many years he was the Vice Dean and Director of the Wharton Graduate Division. He is an internationally recognized expert in transportation economics, and he specializes in demand theory and logistics. In addition to his duties at Wharton, Professor Allen teaches each summer in India and consults for numerous companies domestically and abroad. He has won a number of teaching awards, including the coveted Anvil Award, the highest teaching honor at Wharton since it is voted on by the students.

Neil A. Doherty (Ph.D. Cranfield Institute) is the Frederick H. Ecker Professor of Insurance and Risk Management at the Wharton School of Business, the University of Pennsylvania. He is an internationally recognized expert in corporate risk management, and is the author of Integrated Risk Management (McGraw-Hill, 2000). Professor Doherty has also won numerous teaching awards.

The late Edwin Mansfield was for many years a distinguished professor of economics at the University of Pennsylvania. He was an internationally recognized expert in the economics of technology and industrial organization. His numerous texts, all published by W.W. Norton, have sold millions of copies around the world. In 1979, when Sino-American scientific agreements were finally reached, Mansfield was the first American economist to lecture in the People's Republic of China.

Keith Weigelt (Ph.D., Economics, Northwestern University) is the Rebecca and Morris Marks Professor of Management at the Wharton School of Business, the University of Pennsylvania. He is an internationally recognized expert in business strategy, game theory, and tournaments, with articles published in the following leading journals: Journal of Political Economy, Econometrica, American Economic Review, Quarterly Journal of Economics, Journal of Business, and Management Science. Professor Weigelt has won numerous teaching awards, most recently the Undergraduate Division Excellence in Teaching Award and the “Tough, but I will thank you in 5 years” Award.

A significant improvement

I reviewed the 5th edition of this book and thought it was good. This sixth edition is significantly better and in my view is the top book in managerial economics. The authors are from the Wharton School of Business, one of the top ranked business schools in the world. They have designed the book to show the reader how to apply various concepts to real world applications.

In this edition, the authors have completely revised the chapters on pricing. The book covers both simple and sophisticated pricing models. The chapter on sophisticated pricing models (e.g., two part tariffs, bundling, price discrimination) is terrific and useful to both students and managers.

Other improvements include a brand new chapter on game theory and a new chapter on adverse selection. The chapter on game theory is well written and clearly illustrates important strategic principles. I tip my hat to the authors for providing the reader with a clear understanding of how the theory works and why it is important. The chapter on adverse selection is also well written.

I have looked at several books because I am trying to choose one for the course I teach. After reading this book I look no more. This is the best book for those who really want to understand how to use economics in the business world.

This book is leaps and bounds more impressive than most managerial economics books. The newest concepts in economics like auctions, moral hazard, sophisticated pricing and adverse selection are given full chapter treatments. Not only do the authors clearly explain these concepts, but they show how they are applied in the business world.

I was also impressed with their revised game theory chapter. Instead of the usual dry mathematical treatment, the chapter uses game theory to illustrate the importance of strategic principles. I found the chapter more helpful than any other treatment on game theory.

The authors are professors at The Wharton School and use the book in their class. I can see why Wharton is a top ranked business school. Their students definitely have an advantage in learning from this book.

Commonly referred to as Lisbon's Overseas War (Guerra do Ultramar) or in the former colonies, the War of Liberation (Guerra de Libertação), these struggles played a seminal role in ending white rule in Southern Africa.

Though hardly on the scale of hostilities being fought in South East Asia, the casualty count by the time a military coup d'état took place in Lisbon in April 1974 was significant. It was certainly enough to cause Portugal to call a halt to violence and pull all its troops back to the Metropolis. Ultimately, Lisbon was to move out of Africa altogether, when hundreds of thousands of Portuguese nationals returned to Europe, the majority having left everything they owned behind. Independence for all the former colonies, including the Atlantic islands, followed soon afterwards.

Lisbon ruled its African territories for more than five centuries, not always undisputed by its black and mestizo subjects, but effectively enough to create a lasting Lusitanian tradition. That imprint is indelible and remains engraved in language, social mores and cultural traditions that sometimes have more in common with Europe than with Africa. Today, most of the newspapers in Luanda, Maputo - formerly Lourenco Marques - and Bissau are in Portuguese, as is the language taught in their schools and used by their respective representatives in international bodies to which they all subscribe.

Indeed, on a recent visit to Central Mozambique in 2013, a youthful member of the American Peace Corps told this author that despite having been embroiled in conflict with the Portuguese for many years in the 1960s and 1970s, he found the local people with whom he came into contact inordinately fond of their erstwhile 'colonial overlords'.

As a foreign correspondent, Al Venter covered all three wars over more than a decade, spending lengthy periods in the territories while going on operations with the Portuguese army, marines and air force. In the process, he wrote several books on these conflicts, including a report on the conflict in Portuguese Guinea for the Munger Africana Library of the California Institute of Technology.

Portugal's Guerrilla Wars in Africa represents an amalgam of these efforts. At the same time, this book is not an official history, but rather a journalist's perspective of military events as viewed by somebody who has made a career of reporting on overseas wars, Africa's especially. Venter's camera was always at hand; most of the images used between these covers are his.

His approach is both intrusive and personal and he would like to believe that he has managed to record for posterity a tiny but vital segment of African history.

Al J. Venter has been an international war correspondent for nearly thirty years, primarily for the Jane’s Information Group. He has also produced documentary television films on subjects from the wars in Africa and Afghanistan to sharkhunting off the Cape of Good Hope. Among his previous works are The Iraqi War Debrief: Why Saddam Hussein Was Toppled and Iran’s Nuclear Option: Tehran’s Quest for the Atomic Bomb. A native of South Africa, he is currently resident in the United Kingdom.

Unknown history that few Americans ever read about.

This book was a treasure trove of facts and information about a war that the US press covered very minutely if at all. In fact only when the Carnation Revolution came to pass did most Americans realize that Portugal had been fighting 3 Vietnams at one time, and with somewhat better success than the US did. Shame that American political leaders never read books like this, or have advisors who do rather than make policy decisions on partisan politics. This book really details these conflicts and Mr. Venter had the luck to have visited some of the theaters of operation and came back to tell the tale.

Cold War creeping into dying Colonialism

It’s hard to grasp that Portugal had African colonies up to the 1970s, when pretty much the entire world had left the Colonial bandwagon and was more preoccupied with the Cold War. While the eyes of the world were on Vietnam, Portugal, one of the poorest countries in Europe, was waging three different wars at the same time: in Angola, Mozambique and Portuguese Guinea (today’s Guinea-Bissau).

The book Portugal’s Guerrilla Wars in Africa meticulously analyzes the period. South-African journalist Al Venter is a veteran war correspondent in Africa and the Middle East, and witnessed first hand Portugal’s fight against it’s former colonies. The book has a very good combination of factual research and the author’s own perspective on the conflicts. That was essential for the understanding of someone like me, who knew squat about it. The book also comes with several photographs and maps that help a layman make sense of the conflict.

“It is difficult to tell a man’s age in the bush: a 13-year-old often looks 18 or older and it was no secret that many of those captured were barely 14 or 15, all of them armed. It was the same in old Stanleyville (today Kisangani) in the Congo: some of the worst brutalities were perpetrated by children not yet into their teens.”

It is a conflict in a different scale than Vietnam. Helicopters and bombings were rare, as were direct confrontations. The norm were cat and mouse skirmishes, of slow and constant attrition. More than all, those were wars of wills. The books defends that the Portuguese pride, that wanted to keep a self-image of a colonizing powerhouse, kept Portugal for decades stuck in a war it couldn’t win. There was a crucial imbalance of determination between the colonies and Portugal.

The book describes several atrocities, perpetrated both by the government and the revolutionary groups. The first traces of distress date back to 1961, when Angolan peasants revolted because they had to sell their cotton by a price fixed by Portugal, a lot lower than the international market price. The Portuguese commanders simply bombed dozens of villages with napalm, killing 7 thousand locals.

“During bush operations, everything in their path would be destroyed; livestock slaughtered, crops and villages burnt, the local people rounded up for questioning and anyone acting in a suspicious manner arrested and hauled back to base. Tribesmen who attempted to escape this treatment were regarded as “fleeing terrorists”, and shot. The death would then be formally listed as a “terrorist kill”.”

Most of the Portuguese soldiers, young and poor, felt like they were dragged into a meaningless conflict and did the minimum necessary until their campaign was over. It is sad to see how, like in any conflict, the local population suffered the hardest blows. They were pushed both by the government and revolutionaries. It is very interesting how the book explains the guerrilla’s backgrounds, many insurgents were trained in China and incorporated tactics by Mao Tse Tung and Che Guevara in the African context, like using propaganda and mobility. It’s the beginning of the Cold War creeping into dying Colonialism.

It is also sad to know how these revolutions would end up after Portugal packed away from Africa. The former colonies were taken by even bloodier conflicts, that echo to this day in the continent because of the arbitrary divisions set up by the European nations.

Portugal’s Guerrilla Wars in Africa is at the same time an informative and personal book about an obscure period of our recent history.

Great insight into Portugal's involvement in the "African Liberation Wars."

What looks like a terribly boring title was in fact a very nicely written "memoir" with elements of scholarship. Most unusual was the plethora of photographs, "each worth a thousand words." I learned a lot from this nicely written book and it flowed easily. It was not a typical "boring scholarly book."

Awesome informative book on Mindfulness in your life.

This book is a great read on mindfulness. Many books on mindfulness cover meditation (which this book does also), however this book spends a lot of it's content on incorporating mindfulness into your daily life and strategies to do that. I found this book to be more essential than other books I have read on that topic for that very reason!

I really enjoyed how the author spoke about journaling as a technique to incorporate mindfulness into your daily life. It makes perfect sense! How often do we stop and think about how our actions affect us. When we are rushing around in our daily lives we basically go off instinct. There is no time in this modern day age way of doing things to do so! However, it's to our detriment in a sense, and journaling accomplishes a short time of reflection to bring or actions and their effects into our own awareness.

I've had a lot of great success with the techniques in this book! I highly recommend you add it to your library like I did! :)

First heard a couple of workmates talking about 'mindfulness' - and how great it was. I didn't have a clue what they were on about at first but when they said it helps with stress I was ready to give it a try. Anything that chills you out and makes you happier has got to be worth a try, right?! This book has been a great introduction to mindfulness for me and I've already recommended it to my sister. It explains how living in the present, rather than focusing on the past or worrying about the future, is the way to be....and how to keep your emotions in check. Chapter 2 gives great, simplistic instructions on how to practice mindfulness meditation and this section is worth the cover price of the book alone. I've been practising before bed and it definitely helps me wind down after a long day !
