" Augment, if you will, the foregoing categories of scholars with biologists, philos­ ophers, cosmologists, and theologians-all of whom, in addition to historians, Wolf­ gang Yourgrau, by dint of his inextinguishable enthusiasm and charismatic qualities, assembled in Denver for the Second and Third International Colloquia (in 1967 and 1974, respectively)-and a few other besides, and one arrives at a statement of the credo wh ich Y ourgrau not only professed, but consistently exemplified throughout his adult life.

Great book, but not for most people. The brief biography of Wolfgang Yourgrau is fascianting. Many of the issues discussed in the book are now out of date since it was published in 1983. But still it is very thought provoking.

Essential Reading For Sci-Fi Fans

The Futurological Congress is among the greatest works of Science Fiction ever written, and it is considered by many (myself included) to be S. Lem's finest work.

Set in the not too distant future, Congress is narrated by Ijon Tichy, who recounts the events of his visit to the Futurological Congress. The irony is that the titular event never really occurs thanks to a popular uprising in the host country. Poor Tichy dies only to be resurrected in a future where society is regulated by an endless array of psychotropic drugs.

In today's world of Ritalin, Ambien, Cialis, Prozac, and so on, Lem's drug fueled vision of the future seems eerily prophetic. The translation (from the original Polish) does an excellent job with the laundry list of psuedo-drugs Lem invents for the citizens of the future, and preserves his trademark cynicism and eye for human foibles. Written under the heavy-hand of Soviet rule, Congress is full of digs at government, bureaucracy and the man's timid resistance to manipulation.

An amazing and bizarre story, full of wit and remarkable insight, Congress resonates to this day and rightfully earns its place at the pinnacle of intelligent Sci-Fi.

Comical vision of a drugged-out dystopia

Written when Poland was under the grip of Communism, "The Futurological Congress" is a powerful parable of a totalitarian state that uses psychotropic drugs not only to subdue its citizens but also to make them believe things are better than they are. The first third of the book reads almost like an adventure story: Ijon Tichy is attending a convention of futurologists in Central America, when he and his colleagues are caught up in a bizarre coup d`etat. When Tichy's cryogenically frozen corpse is reanimated decades later, the entire overpopulated world is hooked on drugs.
Unlike most pieces of dystopian fiction, Lem's novel is funny and brainy rather than depressing and catastrophic, but it is still scarily prophetic. At times, though, the prose threatens to collapse into a pun-laden Physician's Desk Reference for the Year 2039: "they give the children throttlepops, then develop their character with opinionates, uncompromil, rebellium, allaying their passions with sordidan and practicol; no police, and who needs them when you have constabuline. . . ?" (These passages must have been a nightmare to translate and, remarkably, they never lose their fluency.) But Lem keeps the reader's interest by alternating his pharmocological laundry lists with clever plot twists and bizarre visions, and the novel's pace continuously accelerates until its frenzied, over-the-top climax.

Prophetically Hilarious! Lem at his best form.

Lem, educated as an physician, presages events well. Many bizarre items appear in this novella set in a near-future global conference of "Futurologists" (Alvin Toffler-types), including a "papelshooter," a gun specifically designed to kill popes, and hors d'oeuvres for enviro-conscious snackers made from the recycled corpses of the recently deceased.

Mountain Man Hero

This is the first book I have read by this author. I fell in love with the hero, MacGregor, mountain man, rough & tough with a heart of gold, everyone's dream hero. Now, Regina is another story, I had a hard time taking to her character. I kept wanting to slap her and send her back to England. This is a story of a mountain man coming to the rescue of a damsel in distress. They meet up with all sorts of trials along the way. It is a wonderful exciting story, in spite of Regina, couldn't put it down.

This is a really great book!! A gem I found at an used books store.

At first I was getting a bit mad at the hero, MacGregor, and was siding with Regina, but then we got to know his past a bit better and saw repeatedly how good he was, how gently he acted with his scrap of a baby and with her... mwell, my heart was completely lost to the man.

The plot was really interesting, with great characters appearing all the time, hot scenes between the main characters and there was also real development and growth from both of them.

I liked reading about the Indians at the time, how they suffered and fought. The author is very talented, indeed. Great descriptions.

At I was getting to the end of the book, Regina (or Violet) was starting to annoy me quite a bit, but I got her point of view, and she ended up redeeming herself... the end was really sweet.

I wish I could have Pierre and/or MacGregor for myself. I'll be reading it again soon. ;)
