Waiting for Godot: A Tragicomedy in Two Acts, by Samuel Beckett

From an inauspicious beginning at the tiny Left Bank Theatre de Babylone in 1953, followed by bewilderment among American and British audiences, Waiting for Godot has become of the most important and enigmatic plays of the past fifty years and a cornerstone of twentieth-century drama. As Clive Barnes wrote, “Time catches up with genius … Waiting for Godot is one of the masterpieces of the century.”

The story revolves around two seemingly homeless men waiting for someone—or something—named Godot. Vladimir and Estragon wait near a tree, inhabiting a drama spun of their own consciousness. The result is a comical wordplay of poetry, dreamscapes, and nonsense, which has been interpreted as mankind’s inexhaustible search for meaning. Beckett’s language pioneered an expressionistic minimalism that captured the existential post-World War II Europe. His play remains one of the most magical and beautiful allegories of our time.

Review

“One of the true masterpieces of the century.” —Clive Barnes, The New York Times

“One of the most noble and moving plays of our generation, a threnody of hope deceived and deferred but never extinguished; a play suffused with tenderness for the whole human perplexity; with phrases that come like a sharp stab of beauty and pain.”
—The Times (London)

“Beckett is an incomparable spellbinder. He writes with rhetoric and music that . . . make a poet green with envy.” —Stephen Spender

“Reading Beckett for the first time is an experience like no other in modern literature.”
—Paul Auster

“[Godot is ] among the most studied, monographed, celebrated and sent-up works of modern art, and perhaps as influential as any from the last century. The nonstory of two tramps at loose ends in a landscape barren of all but a single tree, amusing or distracting themselves from oppressive boredom while they wait for a mysterious figure who never arrives, the play became the ur-text for theatrical innovation and existential thought in the latter half of 20th century.” —Christopher Isherwood, The New York Times

About the Author
Samuel Beckett (1906-1989), one of the leading literary and dramatic figures of the twentieth century, was born in Foxrock, Ireland and attended Trinity University in Dublin. In 1928, he visited Paris for the first time and fell in with a number of avant-garde writers and artists, including James Joyce. In 1937, he settled in Paris permanently. Beckett wrote in both English and French, though his best-known works are mostly in the latter language. A prolific writer of novels, short stories, and poetry, he is remembered principally for his works for the theater, which belong to the tradition of the Theater of the Absurd and are characterized by their minimalist approach, stripping drama to its barest elements. In 1969, Beckett was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature and commended for having "transformed the destitution of man into his exaltation." Beckett died in Paris in 1989.

At the age of seventy-six he said: "With diminished concentration, loss of memory, obscured intelligence... the more chance there is for saying something closest to what one really is. Even though everything seems inexpressible, there remains the need to express. A child need to make a sand castle even though it makes no sense. In old age, with only a few grains of sand, one has the greatest possibility." (from Playwrights at Work, ed. by George Plimpton, 2000)

"Nothing happens, twice".
By B. Alcat
"Nothing happens, nobody comes, nobody goes, it's awful!". That phrase, said by one of the main characters of "Waiting for Godot", somehow sums up the whole plot of this short tragicomedy in two acts. Strange??. You can bet on that!!!. So much that a well-known Irish critic said of it "nothing happens, twice".

The play starts with two men, Vladimir and Estragon, sitting on a lonely road. They are both waiting for Godot. They don't know why they are waiting for him, but they think that his arrival will change things for the better. The problem is that he doesn't come, although a kid does so and says Godot will eventually arrive. Pozzo and his servant Lucky, two other characters that pass by while our protagonists are waiting for Godot, add another bizarre touch to an already surreal story, in which nothing seems to happen and discussions between the characters don't make much sense.

However, maybe that is exactly the point that Samuel Beckett (1906-1989) wanted to make. He was one of the most accomplished exponents of the "Theatre of the Absurd", that wanted to highlight the lack of purpose and meaning in an universe without God. Does Godot, the person that Vladimir and Estragon endlessly wait, symbolize God?. According to an irascible Beckett, when hard-pressed to answer that question, "If I knew who Godot was, I would have said so in the play." So, we don't know. The result is a highly unusual play that poses many questions, but doesn't answer them.

Ripe with symbolism, "Waiting for Godot" is a play more or less open to different interpretations. Why more or less open?. Well, because in order to have an interpretation of your own, you have to finish the play, and that is something that not all readers can do. "Waiting for Godot" is neither too long nor too difficult, but it shows a lack of action and purpose in the characters that is likely to annoy many before they reach the final pages, leading them to abandon the book in a hurry. That is specially true if the reader is a student who thinks he is being barbarously tortured by a hateful teacher who told him to write a paper on "Waiting for Godot" :)

My advice, for what it is worth, is that you should persist in reading it. If it puts you to sleep, try reading it aloud with some friends, and discuss with them the implications of what happens with the characters. This play might not be thoroughly engaging, but it changed theatre and the possibilities opened before it forever. In a way, it provoked a blood-less revolution, and because of that it deserves at least a bit of our attention.

A classic, but best for those who dig absurdism
By Christopher Culver
Fifty years after its premiere, Samuel Beckett's play WAITING FOR GODOT has achieved classic status, yet it is a play more talked about than read or performed. Many people could tell the vague plot of two hobos waiting on a roadside for a man who never comes, a metaphor for the "waiting for God" that forms the duration of human existence, but much of the play remains unknown. Reading the play shows a different side of the play than popular imagination, though it will not be a rewarding activity for all.

The stage is simple. "A country road. A Tree". So is the casting. The repartee of hobos Vladimir and Estragon forms the bulk of the play's dialogue. Two other men, Pozzo and Lucky, twice stop by. Finally a Boy appears as a messenger from the mysterious Godot. Pozzo and Lucky are left out of most popular references to the play, but they form a vital part of its action. When we first meet Pozzo, he is a rich man, smoking a pipe, feasting on a whole chicken... and leading his servant Lucky around with a rope and barking orders at him. The choreographical duties imposed on Lucky are a tour de force of stage writing.

While drama is written to be performed, the text of WAITING FOR GODOT allows one to pick up on various subtleties missing from performance. One is amusing stage directions. When Vladimir says "I don't understand" and Estragon replies, "Use your intelligence, can't you?", there follows the direction "Vladimir uses his intelligence." In the theatre, many of the play's most profound comments come too quickly to be properly reflected upon and digested by the audience, but reading the play lets one proceed through Beckett's musings at one's own pace. Finally, reading the play lets one spot oddities about Beckett's own translation of the play from the original French, many slightly peculiar turns of phrase in English.

While the play's meagre plot of waiting for a God who never reveals himself is often seen as existentialist, reading the play reveals instead an absurdist perspective. Unlike those writers who felt that the absence of God forces Man to determine his purpose on his own, Beckett sees little possibility of purpose. Because of the lack of hope and the frustrations that fill the dialogue, WAITING FOR GODOT can be depressing and inexplicable to many. One's enjoyment from reading the play is dependent essentially on how comfortable one is with absurdism. Nonetheless, I'd recommend at least trying.

The Best Play of the 20th Century
By Jeremy M. Barker
Samuel Beckett's play seems to endlessly perplex reviewers: they want to see in it concrete associations that it generally denies them. Is Godot God? Are Didi and Gogo heroes for their seemingly indefatiguable faith he will arrive, or fools for hinging all their hopes and dreams on a man who never seems to arrive to help alleviate their suffering?

Waiting for Godot, in proper Modernist fashion, strips away all the layers of narrative and form and leaves nothing but the naked husk of a play, which Beckett no doubt felt revealed the human condition at its most basic. But the play's power doesn't really come from that. Rather, what makes Waiting for Godot so compelling is its wide applicability: it's a story about random oppression, brutality, and dreams deferred by harsh realities. It has been performed as an allegory of apartheid South African, the Jim Crow South, the horror of the war in Bosnia and about every other possible situation imaginable. Why? Because as Benjamin Kunkel pointed out in a piece in The New Yorker not so long ago, "[N]ot everyone has a God, but who doesn't have a Godot?"

Beyond the metaphysical implications of the play, though, it's popularity stems from its near-perfection: for all the philosophical meaning people see in it, the action progresses with virtually no direct reference to it, and every line which seems to suggests some sort of grand significance has a very concrete meaning in the action. Take the infamous opening: Estragon, the first of the tramps, struggles to pull off his boot to relieve his swollen foot. Unable to get it off, he gives up and announces "Nothing to be done." Vladimir, wincingly wandering onto the stage and grasping at his crotch (precious few readers and actors for that matter seem to grasp that one of the play's running jokes is Vladimir's venereal disease, which causes him immense pain when urinating), thinks Estragon is commenting on his own ailment, and announces, "I'm beginning to come round to that conclusion myself. All my life I've put it from me, saying Vladimir, be reasonable, you haven't yet tried everything! And I resumed the struggle."

On the one hand, the lines relate concretely to the action of the play; on the other, they have become representative of modern man's ambivalence towards a cruel and uncaring world, and such clever cynicism has linked Beckett to the French Existentialists in whose circles he moved after the Second World War. But seen merely as declamatory statements of world-weary cynicism, the lines lose all their power; Beckett's achievement comes from his ability to link such nihilistic sentiments to extremely comic moments, and it is the humor that carries the reader or the theatergoer through what would otherwise be an unbearably cynical play. Steve Martin, who played Vladimir in a famous 1982 production at the Lincoln Center in New York, put it best when he said that he sought to serve the humor of the play, because the meaning could carry itself but the humor could not. That's a lesson which, sadly, precious few theater directors seem to grasp, but which the careful reader discovers in Beckett. Definitely a must-read, but read it before seeing it, because few productions do it justice.

Champion of Her Heart

Though Marion Warenne's past was but a dim nightmare, her present held a vision of glory—the formidable Dunstan de Burgh. A fierce knight who was determined to win their battle of wills, all the while protesting mightily that he believed not in love….

Dunstan de Burgh, Baron of Wessex, had ofttimes heard himself likened to a wolf on the prowl: fierce, brave and ever-alert to danger. How so, then, could one soft-eyed damsel escape his watchful eye time and again? And even more dangerous, slip past his guard and find her way into his heart?

Who Tamed Who Here?
By M. Rondeau
This is the first book of the de Burgh family and my God I can't wait to get to the others if this one is indicative of what is coming. WOW!
This is the story of the eldest son Dunstan deBurgh and Marion Warenne. It starts out with Marion being rescued by Simon de Burgh and brought to Castle Campion (home to the de Burgh clan)where she stays for the next 6 months before even meeting Dunstan - the eldest de Burgh son. Marion has sustained amnesia and after months of of trying to find out who Marion is the discovery is made and she is to be returned to her Uncle. After putting it to a vote of the 6 de Burgh brothers, Dunstan was elected to return her to her Uncle.
Dunstan had his own property to care for and was very much aginst having to take the time to return this 'piece of baggage' back to her uncle. Marion still did not remember her past but knew, without a doubt, that if she was returned she would be killed. Consequently the trip to return her was one escape attempt after another as she tried to run away from Dunstan.
Dunstan had his own problems, honor bound to do complete this mission his father gave him, and trying to tell himself that he was not feeling any kind of attraction to this 'little brown wren'. Stubborn to a fault, he did NOT believe in love and this was something that did not happen to real people.
What a delightful trip! Naturally, these two get to spend some time together - alone - and what a reckoning this becomes! WOW - Dunstan is one lusty kind of knight and the passion is returned from this 'little brown wren' ! Definitely a page turner and one you must try to get your hands on because you will want to read this one over and over again! The best!

Falling in love with the de Burgh brothers....
By Nora Jean
I really enjoyed Taming the Wolf, the first book in the de Burgh family saga. In fact, I couldn't put it down. At times I wanted to hit Dunstan over the head because he was so darned stubborn and wouldn't listen to what Marion was trying to tell him. He had his honor to uphold and he was darned determined to deliver her back to her devious uncle.

In the end, however, he did see the light and although still stubborn he did show his softer side a little more often; especially with his brothers.

Like the Jude Deveraux's Montgomery's, I absolutely fell in love with the de Burgh brothers. At the moment I'm reading about Geoffrey and since I'm still in the midst of the conflict between Elene and Geoffrey I won't write my review until I'm finished with it, but thus far I am really enjoying the book THE de BURGH BRIDE.

Much to my dismay though, I found that there aren't any further books about the last two de Burgh siblings; which is a shame as I would really like to know why Reynold is the way he is and why does he favor one leg. Then there is of course the youngest: Nicholas. Out of the two last brothers, who holds out the longest at succumbing to cupid's arrow? It is my fervent hope that Simmons will eventually write the last two books in the de Burgh family saga.

I am fortunate to even have the book THE BRIDES OF CHRISTMAS which contains the short story of their father finding a new love as well. I can't read that one though until I read about Simon (The Robber Bride).

I do so love to read books in order.

My Dream Book!!!
By Krista Lyn
This book has all the ingredients that I love in a good romance novel:

1. A hero who is a strong, fierce, macho warrior..... however one that is clueless about love and emotion.
2. A heroine who is strong, independent, and not afraid to push her hero's buttons.
3. A strong family with strong ties to one another.
4. A book that gives the hero/heroine significant time in the book alone with one another!
5. A book that has a some intrigue, suspense, humor, and sadness.
6. A book with scorching sensuality.
7. A hero who '"falls hard" for his lady and reforms.
8. A satisfying ending.

I know this is pretty much the formula for all romance novels, but SERIOUSLY Deborah Simmons does this formula flawlessly. I liken this book to some of my favorite Garwood novels, but it is truly one on to it's own.

This is book 1 of the de Burgh family series...and it is staying on my keeper shelf for good. I may even reread it now (which is very unlike me!) It has it all!

Informative History of a Budding Technology
By Phil Wisniewski
This book provides a unique and interesting perspective of the world of simulation as seen through the eyes of this simulation expert. He describes how an early childhood interest in cardboard aviation trainers eventually evolves into a highly successful career in simulation, modeling, training and education. This book provides little known facts concerning the history of simulation, the current state of the industry and the author's insight into its future. The book also provides many of the author's personal experiences in simulation, is well written and holds the readers interest.

This book is a MUST HAVE for all drummers!
By John DeChristopher
You don't have to be a drummer to appreciate the beautiful photography and in-depth artist bios in "Sticks 'n' Skins", but if you ARE a drummer, you'll definitely want to own this book! Jules Follett and Jamie Pastor have done an outstanding job capturing the spirit of drummers of all styles, playing drums and the drumming community, in this book. There is also a section dedicated to photographer Lissa Wales, who the drumming community lost in 2005. Lissa was loved by everyone in the drumming community and her work is memorialized in a beautiful tribute at the front of the book.

"Sticks 'n' Skins" is chock full (over 500 pages!) of drummers and percussionists from around the world and every style of music, including legends and drumming stars such as Buddy Rich, Tony Williams, Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, Ringo Starr, Ginger Baker, Charlie Watts, Tre Cool, Tommy Lee, Simon Phillips, Joey Kramer, Jeff Porcaro, Jim Keltner, Chad Smith (to name only a few). It also includes behind the scenes photos from Drum Industry events such as PASIC, the Modern Drummer Festival, Montreal Drumfest, The 2008 Zildjian Drummers Achievement Awards and NAMM, as well as the movers and shakers within the Drum Industry. I received my copy in October and still haven't read it from cover to cover - there's just so much in it! You really need to own this book!

By Billy Amendola
This is a must check-out coffee table photography book for every drummer and fans of drums & drummers! Photographer Jules Follett and her Fotos By Folletts team have captured the personality of over 500 drummers (I am truly honored to be a small part of this amazing accomplishment) Not only are there amazing photos by Jules and company, also included are legendary shots by the late Lissa Wales. (Lissa was very well known & loved in the drumming community and left us too soon) It's very special & touching that Jules has dedicated the opening pages to Lissa with a special tribute to her photos. I highly recommend this beautiful art of work! For more info please visit [...] (or click above and buy one...or two:)

For The Drummer In Your Heart
By Vince Barranco
This beautiful book of photography truly speaks to the drummer in your heart. Each page contains an enlightening glimpse into the world of one person's unique story of his or her passion for the instrument of the drum and/or drum set. Over 400 drummers are included, and while you may possibly be able to think of a few who do not grace a page, you just know all are included thanks to the overwhelming sense of community and brotherhood represented through the author's humbling approach. Jules Follett has not only accomplished a task far beyond vision with this amazingly well crafted "coffee table book of drummers," but she has gracefully dedicated the entire work to the memory of yet another photographer whom she only knew as her Guardian Angel... Lissa Wales, and included a complete section with some of Lissa's special timeless moments with more keepers of time. Congratulations to Jules on an adventure well taken, and to all who are fortunate enough to spend time enjoying its blessed contents. Anyone who has even a hint of a drummer in your heart will surely treasure this historical work of art for years to come.

Review
The Handbook of Global Supply Chain Management is no light reference, but a solid pick for college-level libraries strong in holdings pertaining to global supply chains. . . .Attention to well-rounded detail and depth from different approaches makes The Handbook of Global Supply Chain Management a critical acquisition for any serious college-level collection offering grad students and researchers detailed perspectives on the subject. (Midwest Book Review 2006-12-05)

Providing such a book is important for at least three reasons:

First, doctoral/postgraduate students must, in the course of their dissertation projects, provide a literature review of what they have researched within a given topic/area. The manner in which papers are referenced here makes it possible to conduct a detailed investigation of their approaches, such as research frameworks, methodologies, applied theories and empirical observations. Thus, this book aims to provide postgraduate and research students, faculty, practitioners an overview of what has been researched in the recent past in some important areas of SCM.

Second, providing such an overview also makes it possible for the professional managers to understand the trends and new development in methodologies and approaches having practical relevance.

Third, such a contribution makes it possible to identify gaps between current, state-of-the-art thinking within
SCM and the themes actually researched in.

Extraordinary comprehensive
By Jan Husdal
The Handbook of Global Supply Chain Management is an excellent book. My interest in it stems from the fact that it contains a chapter on risk management. It was after reading Manuj and Mentzer's articles on 'Global Supply Chain Risk Management' and 'Global Supply Chain Risk Management Strategies' that I came across this book, when searching for more papers from Mentzer and/or Manuj, and naturally, I decided to see if there was something on supply chain risk in it. There was.

Deja vu

Unfortunately, the chapter doesn't say much more than what has already been said in the above articles. This book chapter follows more or less the same structure as the Global Supply Chain Risk Management article, it even uses the same figure, but it is better written and more geared towards the practitioner, with examples of how to put the model into use. Personally I find the book chapter preferable to the article. But - there is a very good reason to look closer at that chapter, it is a figure that perfectly illustrates how a risk matrix can be put to use when assessing supply chain risk.

Comprehensive

As to the rest of the book, it is to say the least, comprehensive, filled with 600 pages of intensely condensed knowledge, covering everything about Global Supply Chain Management from A to Z.

Conclusion

The book comes with a hefty price tag, but reasonably priced used ones are usually available. Although I have focused solely on the chapter on risks, I did browse the other chapters, and I must say they are equally solidly written. It is handbook indeed, allowing the reader to focus on one area of investigation at the time, while never leaving the whole chain out of sight.

Understanding "the complexities of a global, cross functional, cross-enterprise view of business"
By Robert Morris
Here in a single volume is a wealth of information and counsel provided by many of the world's foremost authorities on global supply chain management. The material has been selected and edited with meticulous care by John T. Mentzer, Matthew B, Myers, and Theodore P. Stank who also collaborated on Chapter 1 ("Why Global Supply Chain Management?") and contributed to others. They provide this definition of Supply Chain Management (SCM) which was devised by the Supply Chain Research Group at the University of Tennessee in 2004: "the systematic, strategic coordination of the traditional business functions within a particular company and across businesses within the supply chain, for the purposes of improving the long-term performance of the individual companies and the supply chain as a whole." After the introductory chapter, the material is organized as follows:

Part I: Understanding Global Supply Chains

Overview: The contributors focus on strategy, assessment of the global environment, value and customer service management, demand management, knowledge management, and process orientation.

Part II: Managing the Functions

Overview: The contributors focus on management of marketing and sales, product, operations, integrated logistics, inventory, transportation, warehouse, and personnel.

Part III: Resource Management

Overview: The contributors focus on the lean supply chain ("The path to Excellence"), financial and risk management, and interpretation systems (i.e. knowledge, strategy, and performance).

Part IV: Managing the Relations

Overview: The contributors focus on relationship management, logistics outsourcing, international sourcing (i.e. "redressing the balance"), negotiating throughout the supply chain, interfunctional coordination, intercorporate coordination, and global supply chain control.

Part V: Making It Happen

Overview: The contributors focus on supply chain innovation, global supply chain security, diagnosing the supply chain, and change management.

Mentzer, Myers, and Stank conclude from the previously provided definition of SCM that it is "a management process that deals with inbound and outbound flows, from the perspective of the focal organization, its suppliers, and its customers. This means a fundamental aspect of GSCM [i.e. Global Supply Chain Management] is the consideration of not just the cost and the profit goals of one company (the focal

In this volume, Mentzer, Myers, Stank, and their associates make a substantial contribution to the evolution of thought processes that lead to a wider and deeper understanding of "the complexities of a global, cross functional, cross-enterprise view of business and fosters an appreciation of key dimensions that contribute to success within this new environment." For senior-level executives in companies that are now involved in a GSCM or are now considering such an involvement, this book is a "must read." That is not to say that it is an easy read. However, for those who absorb and digest the material with appropriate care, it will be - and remain - an indispensable source of information and counsel.

A critical acquisition for any serious college-level collection
By Midwest Book Review
The Handbook of Global Supply Chain Management is no light reference, but a solid pick for college-level libraries strong in holdings pertaining to global supply chains. It identifies emerging developments and compares and contrasts them with past GSCM methods, analyzes chains, functions, resources and techniques for making it happen, and uses contributors from professions around the world, both in academic and private business circles. It's this attention to well-rounded detail and depth from different approaches which makes The Handbook of Global Supply Chain Management a critical acquisition for any serious college-level collection offering grad students and researchers detailed perspectives on the subject.
