an improved second edition by two great writers

I took my first short course in response surface designs from Ray Myers at an IPE course. He was a great teacher and taught out of his first book. That book was self-published after he had disagreements with his original publisher. Many years later he and Doug Montgomery joined forces and published the first edition of this book with Wiley. I have reviewed that book previously for amazon.
This second edition is ideal. When I took the course I understood the material so well that I was able to apply the methodology right away in my work. The clarity of these authors is outstanding and they provide a wealth of well illustrated examples. It also is greatly expanded and has many student exercises at the end of each chapter. In addition to the standard response surface designs the book does a good job of coevring experimental design concepts in general and even covers Taguchi designs and robust parameter design. In addition topics such as mixture experiments and evolutionary operation are covered. Advanced topics include the generalized linear models and the general estimating equations approach to mixed effects models and repeated measures ANOVA.

Very authoritative with an extensive list of references and appendices to aid understanding.

The best RSM book out there! Does NOT miss the point.

This book is the best Response Surface book available today and was used in my graduate Response Surface courses. Myers and Montgomery do not miss any points with this book - Expected Mean Squares and Nested Factorial Designs are part of the design and analysis of Factorial designs , which are a completely separate field of DOE. These points have no relevance in Response Surface Methodology.

If you are looking for an excellent book, this is the one for you! It includes many practical discussions on choosing the right design for your analysis (great for engineers), as well as details of the matrix algebra used in the analysis of response surface designs (great for methematicians or statisticians). You will not find a better book!

As a quality engineer for Xerox Mexicana, application of DOE and RSM is part of the day-to-day activities. This book is an excellent tutor to apply RSM. Highly recommended.

But the drama in Capa's life wasn't limited to one side of the lens. Born in Budapest as Andre Freidman, Capa fled political repression and anti-Semitism as a teenager by escaping to Berlin, where he first picked up a Leica and then witnessed the rise of Hitler. By the time his images of D-Day appeared in Life Magazine, he had become a legend, the first photographer to make his calling appear glamorous and sexy, and the model for many of the most intrepid photographers to this day. In 1947, after a decade covering war, he founded a cooperative agency-Magnum-and in the process revolutionized the industry. For the first time, photographers would retain their own copyrights and negatives, and nearly half a century later, Magnum remains the most prestigious agency of its kind.

By the time he died, at just forty-one in 1954, Capa was not only the greatest adventurer in photographic history. He had become a colleague and confidant to writers Irwin Shaw, John Steinbeck, and Ernest Hemingway and director John Huston, and a seducer of several of his era's most alluring icons, including Ingrid Bergman.

"It does seem to me that Capa has proved beyond all doubt that the camera need not be a cold mechanical device," John Steinbeck wrote of photojournalist Robert Capa in a quote that launches this well-written, exhaustively researched biography. "Like the pen, it is as good as the man who uses it. It can be the extension of mind and heart." That’s quite a compliment coming from an author like Steinbeck, but then Capa won the respect and friendship of some of the brightest talents of his generation; other admirers and poker buddies included Ernest Hemingway and John Huston, and among his many loves was actress Ingrid Bergman. Robert Capa was the archetype of the intrepid war photographer. Asserting that "if your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough," Capa braved combat in the Spanish Civil War, hit Omaha Beach in the first wave on D-Day, and jumped behind German lines with American paratroopers, returning with visceral pictures-like the famous (and possibly staged) "falling soldier" photo of a Spanish Republican militiaman who had just been shot-that defined our idea of what modern war looks like. "Profligate, passionate, impulsive," Capa was a ladies' man who liked nice togs, hobnobbed with the rich and famous, got caught up in anti-Fascist and Popular Front politics, and played poker compulsively when he was not risking his life in combat-in other words, he practically invented the persona of the celebrity photojournalist. André Friedmann, a.k.a. Robert Capa, war photographer, bon vivant, and co-founder of Magnum, the legendary photo agency, remains the archetype of the committed photojournalist, risking his life to capture indelible images of the Spanish Civil War, Japan's invasion of China, Second World War battles in North Africa, Italy, France, and Germany, and Israel's war for independence. A Hungarian refugee who arrived in Paris in 1933, Capa transformed himself into a charming, caustic adventurer, a high-stakes gambler who left behind a heartbroken trail of beautiful women (including Ingrid Bergman). Kershaw is sympathetic, but by no means blind to his subject's technical, personal, and occasionally ethical limitations, and he conscientiously corrects the romantic embellishments that Capa made to his life story. No matter who tells it, there's a haunting inevitability to the story's end, when, in 1954, Capa finally runs out of luck—at the age of forty, the first American correspondent to die in Indochina.

It's okay

Capa is one of the romantic characters of journalism, a free spirit with an insatiable appetite for risk-taking, alcohol, cigarettes and women. That he died at age 40 in the line of duty as a war photographer has only embellished his image. These are the facts we have known about Capa for decades, reported nicely in Whelan's biography in the 1980's. This book doesn't expand on this information very much.

If you leave out the sections about the famous women he bedded, this would be a much shorter book. It's tawdry in that regard but that does keep the book rolling along. Overall, it's not a bad biography of Capa. It does seem to me to borrow heavily from Whelan's biography and from Capa's own book "Slightly Out Of Focus". If you're familiar with those books, there are no new revelations here.

I do take issue with one small point. Capa is constantly referred to as having Leicas dangling around his neck, using Leicas on assignments and holding Leicas. While I do not doubt Capa used Leicas--along with other brands of cameras--during his career, Kershaw's repeated references are tedious. This is especially true when one considers that Capa is closely identified with the now defunct 35mm Zeiss Contax, he used Contax cameras during the D-Day invasion and he was using Contax cameras at the time of his death in Indochina in 1954. In fact, the two photographs in Kershaw's book that show Capa with a camera "dangling around his neck" actually show him with Contax cameras, not Leicas.

That small point is indeed small, however, it begs the question of how correct the other information might be. Of course biographies are often based on hearsay and ancedotal information, the veracity of which is open to interpretation. Maybe Kershaw was just invoking creative license and using Leica as metaphor. It's not a point any non-photographer reader would even notice. Still, I find it a little troubling.

Overall, this is a decent but derivative sketch of Capa.

superb - the best account yet

A great, cinematic read - a shame that the estate did not allow photographs, but they never will. Yet this book is so vivid and esxciting that you don't notice the images not being there - you see them in your head. Really tremendous research, so much more objective than the authorized hagiographer Whelan's account, and this will one day be a movie - it just feels so right. A great, great tale told very well by Kershaw. Best bio on a photographer ever written.

This book is a story, told to be thrilling and informative and will stand the test of time as the best book written about the trade of war photography. It should be a film because the action and character development are well plotted. And if you want to know, close up, about the great moments of the last century, then here is a ring-side seat on history in the making too. Inspiring stuff. If only there were more biographies written like this.

About the Author

Jean-Marc Spaggiari, an HBase contributor since 2012, works as an HBase specialist Solutions Architect for Cloudera to support Hadoop and HBase through technical support and consulting work. He has worked with some of the biggest HBase users in North America.

Jean-Marc’s prime role is to support HBase users over their HBase cluster deployments, upgrades, configuration and optimization, as well as to support them regarding HBase related application development. He is also a very active HBase community member, testing every release from performance and stability standpoints.
Prior to Cloudera, Jean-Marc worked as a Project Manager and as a Solution Architect for CGI and insurances companies. He has almost 20 years of Java development experience. In addition to regularly attending HBaseCon, he has spoken at various Hadoop User Group meetings and many conferences in North America, usually focusing on HBase related presentations and demonstration.

Kevin is currently a Field Engineer at Rocana where he works with customers to architect large-scale IT Operations. Prior to Rocana, Kevin worked at Cloudera for over four years where he interacted with numerous Fortune 500 companies across every vertical.

In addition, to his day to day at Rocana, Kevin works closely with the open source Apache community. He is a contributor on the Apache HBase project, has written numerous blog posts and presented at multiple conferences regarding the Hadoop ecosystem.

Terrific stuff!

This book covers it all. It explains massage from the beginning in simple terms anyone can follow. But it doesn't stop there. It goes into vast detail, explaining why and how. I felt like an expert after I read it. It is truly accessible for those of us who might feel like an idiot at the beginning. I always felt silly when it came to giving a back rub. But now I realize the history behind the practice of massage and the value it can give to me and my partner. Because of this book, I'm quickly becoming an expert!

A Fun and Informative Trip

This is an instructive and, dare I say it, entertaining map to the world of touch therapy. The authors take us through a wide range of massage topics, including techniques, history, philosophy and more, in easy to understand terms. The format of chapters, sidebars and summaries gives us the details while reminding us not to forget the essentials. Finally, in the text and graphics, the authors remember that a little levity makes the trip that much more enjoyable. I would recommend this book both to health care professionals and those just looking for a way to relax at the end of a day that has seemed like a week. Fine, fun work.

Hands down the best introductory book on massage ever!

Idiots everywhere, rejoice! After finishing this excellent book, you too can give a massage! In this down-to-earth tome the reader is treated to the history, terminology and easy to follow techniques of massage. If you've ever had a desire to learn about, or give a massage, you owe it to yourself to check out this book. 2 thumbs (and all the other digits) UP for this great book.

About the Author

Dr. De Sellers began one of the earliest cognitive-based learning framework courses for American college students in 1973 at Texas State University, incorporating both emerging theory and research-based practice from numerous academic disciplines.  Although carrying administrative duties, including Dean of General Studies and Director of the Student Learning Assistance Center, she continued to teach the course for 25 years.  She holds both an M.A. and Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction, with a focus on adult learners, from the University of Texas at Austin.  Currently she is president of Cerridwen, Inc., a counseling and educational consulting firm, and is a Licensed Professional Counselor with a specialty in pastoral counseling.    

 

Dr. Carol W. Dochen directs the Student Learning Assistance Center at Texas State University. In addition to her administrative duties, she has taught both the University’s learning framework course and first-year seminar course for more than 25 years. She is actively involved in state and national developmental education organizations and was a founding member of the annual statewide College Academic Support Programs (CASP) conference and the Texas Association for Developmental Education (TADE), of which she is a past president. She holds an M.Ed. in School Psychology from Texas State University and a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration, with a minor in Educational Psychology, from the University of Texas at Austin.

 

Dr. Russ Hodges is an associate professor in the College of Education at Texas State University where he co-created and now teaches graduate courses in the new doctoral, master’s, and certificate programs in developmental education. Russ also coordinates the University’s learning framework course. Russ is currently serving his third term as chair of the Council of Learning Assistance and Developmental Education Associations (CLADEA). He is a past president and treasurer of the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA). Russ also serves on the editorial boards for the Journal of Developmental Education and the Journal of College Reading and Learning. He holds a M.Ed. in Counseling from the University of Louisiana Monroe and an Ed.D. in Developmental Education from Grambling State University.
