Gr 1–3—Three first cousins, each of whom represents a different Filipino ethnic group, introduce readers to the history, culture, and daily life of their country. The geographical, religious, and (some) cultural differences among them showcase the rich diversity of the Philippines while stressing the similarities among the children, as well as what they have in common with American children. Each spread is illustrated with bright watercolors and features a different topic, such as history, biodiversity and current environmental concerns, sights to see, favorite foods, crafts to make at home, and how to say thank you in a selection of the many commonly spoken languages. This approach makes it easy to browse but sometimes ends up simplifying the topic: some of the history is muddled and contradictory. VERDICT This latest offering in Tuttle's "All About…" series is the strongest yet and much needed.—Jennifer Rothschild, Arlington County Public Libraries, VA
Review
"One of the nicest aspects of the book is the stress on the different ethnicities all coming together to enrich and form the one country of the Philippines. We talked about how similar this is to our own community where my kids have friends from Japan, Belgium, China and India, who love to play together…Overall, I would highly recommend this book for a colorful and engaging introduction to the Philippines." —Schools 'N More blog
"The All About Asia series is the children's version of a folklore handbook, a user-friendly encyclopedia, a DIY manual for experiencing an Asian country's culture from a youth's point of view." —AsianFortuneNews.com
"The large format and attractive, cartoonlike illustrations provide an inviting look at a country not often included in many other resources for children." —Kirkus
"This latest offering in Tuttle's All About… series is the strongest yet and much needed" —School Library Journal
"Full-color watercolor illustrations by Dandon-Albano are a perfect complement to the text, brimming with recognizable details and the ebullient colors and liveliness that are hallmarks of Filipino culture. Plenty of hands-on art projects, recipes (all of which will require adult supervision), and activities make this book a truly interactive lesson in geography." —Booklist
"If you are looking to teach your children about one of the most diverse, friendly and fun cultures in the world, then you must get All About The Philippines…" —The Baby Spot Magazine
"I feel the entire book gave us a glimpse at life in the Philippines. I can highly recommend this book as well as all the others in the series. We love them!!" —Crafty Moms Share blog
"A few weeks ago, we were sent a copy of the book All about the Philippines, and it sent my kids and I off on an exploration of this fascinating archipelago. The book itself is a wonderful place to start, since it features stories, songs, crafts, and games for kids. My kids recognized Sungka as the game they know as mancala, and they say we need to make leche flan sometime soon. I think we will also play Piko — a Filipino version of the American game of hopscotch — as soon as the rain we are thrilled to finally enjoy dies down." —MamaSmiles.com blog

Great Addition to All About The Series
By John Z
The book tells you all about the island nation. The story is mostly told through the eyes of three cousins. You learn about their families, where they live, and their traditions, all while learning about the diverse geography and population of the country. As the subtitle says, you learn through stories, songs, crafts and games, all of which help to keep the target audience of 3rd to 6th graders engaged. For instance, you can make a simple parol (straw star) and learn why they were used. You can travel to the different islands that make up the country and learn how the people and culture of each are different. And, you can learn about the history of the island and how it became an independent country. All told with great cartoon-like illustrations in a way to both inform and entertain the reader.
Overall a great book for the 8-12 year old to learn more about the country’s history and the daily life of the local residents. I think we may just have to try one of the recipes in the book. Some of the recipes are more child friendly than others, but after watching some of the kids cooking shows on TV, if you’re child is comfortable in the kitchen, can probably do them all. Received review copy from publisher, with no promise for review here, only for my blog.

A superb introduction to the Philippines to foster global awareness in children
By Allison Branscombe
What a superb introduction to the Philippines for children! Gidget Jimenez does a remarkable job of explaining the diversity of this multi-island nation using three cousins who describe differences and similarities in their daily lives, favorite foods, culture and religions. She synthesizes pertinent history, geography, environmental and cultural issues in a nuanced, but very kid friendly way. Filippino words, games and recipes are sprinkled throughout. This would be easy reading for grade school kids, but parents, grandparents and teachers could read this appealing book to younger kids and they would gain so much. I will wager many adults will learn quite a bit, as I did. Corazon Dandan-Albano's illustrations welcome the reader into the text, with a whimsical appealing charm. This book belongs in schools and libraries everywhere.

LOVE the illustrations!
By This Kid Reviews Books
First of all, I love that the book has three kids giving you a tour of life in the Philippines, and that, while they look nothing alike, are all related through their mothers! It captures the diversity and flavor of the Philippines. Ms. Dandan-Albano’s illustrations really bring the culture to life and perfectly compliment the educational value of the text. The illustrations make the reading fun. I recommend this book to older children, as it is twice the length of a traditional picturebook or for parents and teachers looking to do units on different countries. The book is packed full of activities, not just facts.
