love Calmes' shifters
By J'aime
I think what attracts me most to this author is her original world-building. In Change of Heart, it was cats. And it was not just cats as placeholders for the more common werewolves. She built a unique society with laws, rules of etiquette and a social hierarchy. It was imaginative and fun, and gave the underlying gay romance a lot of depth. Here we have another unique shifter race, and the hint of another such original society. It is only a hint because this is a novella, not a novel.

When Mason stops to help what he thinks is a lost old man find his way home, he discovers a gathering of some very strange and very naked people. Exhausted after a double shift as a fireman, the events of that night seem surreal until Luc shows up near his home and proceeds to turn his world upside down. This novella is obviously intended to have sequels, so while we get a bit character development and minor world-building, it isn't much. Mainly, readers get an introduction to the heroes, some piping hot sex and hints of a plot to come.

I will warn readers, the main characters once again border on Mary-Sueism. That doesn't bother me because this author has a lot more to offer in her stories, but if that character-trait rubs you wrong... Overall, I was intrigued by the world introduced in Romanus and found the initial romance satisfying. I will not hesitate to order a sequel when it comes along.

Very Steamy, but I could have done with more story and world building
By Cole Riann
Mace is a firefighter, who after a double shift is on his way home when he almost runs over an old man wandering in the middle of the Kentucky mountain road. After stopping and getting the man into his truck to get to help, he can't help but notice that something about the old man isn't quite right, and against his better judgement allows the old man to insist he be taken home instead of the hospital. When he finds the place the old man says he lives, it seems to be some sort of hippie compound, with lots of people running around naked around a bonfire. Though tired as he is, he seems to be taking it all in stride, though the non-answers they keep giving him are a bit frustrating. When he decides to stay because he's too sleepy to drive home, he meets Luc, a massive beast of a beautiful man who takes his breath away and has a raw confidence and sexuality that stuns him. He's smitten, and much more very quickly, even when it all starts to hit the fan.

I had a few problems with this story. It's not what I think a lot of people complain about Mary's stories (the perfect men, etc.) because I'm quite used to that and find it charming most times now, but more that there's actually very little of the world ever given until a somewhat info dump near the end. Also, while I noticed there was care not to be insta-love, in the sense that Mace finds it very important not to give his heart away so quickly and insist on a slower romance, he does seem to fall quite quickly and his actions seemed contrary to his words, so I'm not quite sure I wouldn't label it insta-love. That however, is a matter of opinion from reader to reader.

What I did like about this story was the unusual world and creatures -- gargoyles -- which was quite interesting though I would have liked to learn a lot more, especially with so many questions unanswered. Most of all, the chemistry between Mace and Luc, which is completely sexual and didn't seem very romantic to me, personally, was HOT HOT HOT. Completely scalding, which was very nice to read and I enjoyed that immensely. I ended up feeling that this was mostly an erotic read with a nice world around it. I needed more story for it to feel really romantic to me, or for there to be an organic relationship grow between the two. But I was okay with that, such as it was. It didn't make the story wonderful to me, but it was definitely interesting and pleasing to read.

I'm a fan of Mary Calmes, a pretty big fan, so I really liked this story where some readers might find more fault with it. Or, at least, they might find that those faults weigh more. I suppose what I'd really like would be to read a sequel, where we learn more about the world and perhaps get to know some more of the characters.

I enjoyed it

Review written for Love Bytes Reviews.

Coming off a double shift, Mason James is exhausted but not so much that he doesn’t stop to help the old man walking along the side of the road. Thinking only that he’s doing a good deed, Mason takes the elderly man home only to encounter more strangeness than his overly tired brain can handle. Whatever is going on with the group of people he’s run into gets pushed back to the furthest corner of his mind, however, when he meets Luc Toussaint. Luc is everything he’s ever wanted in a man all wrapped up in one supremely sexy package but Luc has secrets that could push Mason away before they even get a chance.

I love Mary Calmes, I really do; a lot of her stories are comfort fics to me. Mason was an interesting character; he’s a fireman and used to helping people even if he isn’t on the clock. You could tell that he cared but that he was also a bit gun shy when it comes to relationships. (With good reason, as you find out.) Luc you never get to know as much as I would’ve liked; he doesn’t understand why Mason wants to be with him but isn’t going to look a gift horse in the mouth, so to speak. The story was interesting and though it was a standalone, it felt as though it would’ve been a good start to a new series; I would love it that was the case but alas, I am to live with the disappointment of no sequel. This was on the shorter side and I don’t want to ruin Luc’s secret so I’ll just say that if you’ve read the Change of Heart series you may enjoy this one. Also, if you purchased this book previously, there were no changes made except to the cover, so don’t go out and buy it again.
