this is a great book for anyone interested in game design

George Phillies is a professor of physics at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Massachusetts. He is also an avid player and collector of board wargames, and he teaches courses at WPI on the design of board games. Phillies wrote this book to accompany a course on board wargames (the videos for which are available on Phillies' YouTube channel).
This book focuses on the design of recreational board wargames, rather than wargames that are used in the military. Because it is a textbook, Phillies discusses all the things that one needs to take into account in designing such games in all the detail one could want. The primary example of a board wargame in the book is the Avalon Hill classic Stalingrad (about which game Phillies has written two other books), but he also examines the games 1914 and Panzerblitz.
Even if you are not particularly interested in board games or board wargames, this is a great book for anyone interested in game design.
