Well written but not comprehensive

As usual, Fowler delivers a very well structured book, easy to both read and use as reference material. He is a very able and pragmatic writer and that shows in this book.

However, I can't consider this book a good text because of the things it omits. This is a book about designing DSLs and this task is one of the things functional languages excel at, but Fowler establishes in the introduction that he is going to happily ignore all things related to functional programming and never looks back. Anyone interested in designing DSLs owes it to himself to research Haskell, Scala and F# as they are vastly superior to Java in this respect.

Fowler has been one of the best at writing about OO design and approaches this book in the same way, sadly he hasn't upgraded his knowledge to include other paradigms that in this case address the problem at hand better.

the book is like a good conversation providing an overview of why one would seriously consider using a DSL and the major approaches that one might consider. It provides a good framework for further learning. I was hoping he would develop his examples, which are good, in more detail.

Very nice!

As an occasional user of lexx/yacc and a frequent developer of rules engines - this book filled in many gaps and answered many whys. My next rule engine will make use of a DSL utilizing many of the patterns described.

As summer approaches, and the gym is packed with individuals trying to work off their winter weight and prepare their beach bodies, author Carmen Carter’s book, “Home Workout for Beginners: Sculpt Your Body and Blast Belly Fat,” is your low-cost solution to weight management.

The author, through personal experience, has created a home workout experience challenging enough to help you lose weight, but with a level of difficulty that’s easily achievable by any beginner that is new to physical fitness.

Especially for those individuals that have limited time or feel self-conscious while attending the gym. By using a home workout program you can exercise in the privacy of your own home, and you can also complete the exercises according to your personal physical limitations. The idea is that exercise should be fun and should not cause you pain, which is what often leads people to discontinue their exercise program. As always, it’s a good idea to talk to your doctor before you begin any type of exercise program.

So, for the beginner starting their workout and time is limited, a warm-up using stretches is extremely important in preparing the body to burn calories. However, it’s not mandatory to push yourself to complete each each exercise routine. You can definitely take a rest break in between sessions, or modify the exercises for your current fitness level. The author encourages the newbie to take the routines slowly, so as their abdominal strength improve, so will their core strength, and their level of exercise will also increase.

There are specific types of exercises listed in this book with detailed instructions on how to perform them. There are exercises for your upper and lower body, full body workouts, and a 15 minute yoga session with step-by-step instruction on how to perform the process. Plus, a bonus tip section listed under each exercises, showing you correct hands and head placement while exercising.

A gym membership is not necessary for the beginner who would like to start a fitness program. Not a lot of fluff here -- I HATE FLUFF!

As revealed in another review of a book I finished a few days ago, I'm on a quest to start changing my life for the better... One area I really need improvement on is my fitness. I work out of my home and before I know it, I've worked an 18 hour day without even getting up to eat or go to the bathroom, let alone go to the gym and work out. In other words... Like everyone else today, I'm busy and yes... I am an extreme workaholic. For those reasons, I would prefer to work out at home and this book was just what the doctor ordered! This book helped me come up with a very simple, fast, YET SUPER EFFECTIVE work out with some free weights I already had and what I like about this is I can get up from work -- go work out -- cool down -- go back to work feeling super energized. When I used to work out at a gym, I never felt that way afterward... I was always tired and hungry. This time I'm taking it slow... Not doing too much too fast. I'll scale up my workout as I get stronger. I'm staying hydrated. I'm learning about how to better eat for my fitness instead of grabbing a $6 burger all the time. Not a lot of fluff here -- I HATE FLUFF! Just a lot of good, solid information on how to get started working out at home and getting in shape. If you're anything like me and how I've described myself in this review? Go ahead and get the book! You'll be glad you did. 5 STARS!

A good primer with helpful exercises

I've been lifting weights ever since I was 13, the summer before freshman football season. Weight lifting and workouts have been an integral part of my life ever since for the past 16 years.

One thing that really bugs me is how so many people go to the gym and exercise incorrectly, or in general have no real idea what it is they're doing. I am going to start recommending this book to these people. While I am familiar with all of these exercises in the book already, it's an easy read and a helpful primer for anyone who wants to dive in and attain knowledge of the basics. A wonderful guideline for beginners to improve the results of their workouts and avoid injury.

About the Author

Rebecca Donatelle is an Associate Professor in Public Health and is the Coordinator of the Public Health Promotion and Education Programs in the College of Health and Human Sciences at Oregon State University. She has a Ph.D. in Community Health/Health Education, a Master of Science degree in Health Education, and a Bachelor of Science degree with majors in both Health/Physical Education and English. She is also a Certified Health Education Specialist in behaviors and behavior change. She has received the Leadership Award, outstanding teacher award in her college, and a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Presidential Award for Promising New Research in the Smoke-Free Families National Initiative.

Outdated Information

This goes for a lot of textbooks in the Health industry, but most of the information is about 10-20 years old, and has been proven either wrong, or just more information that changes the way of thinking. Great book for someone who knows nothing about health, but common sense and recent research renders much of the book outdated.

Good but could have been Great

The book gets 4 stars when it could have had 5. Why?

Well, there are far too many editions, revisions, etc available and it's a confusing landscape to navigate. I mean, yes, I can figure it out but I really shouldn't have to. There's no reason for this. Provide 1 low cost alternative, a mid-range paperback, and a kindle version. That's it. The digital packages are also not clear but whatever. That's enough of that.

Some people liked the illustrations. I found the layout a bit much. As though a graphic design student got a little ambitious and forgot about function. When trying to read all the information on the page, it starts to interfere with the flow of reading a chapter in sequence. It's a problem. I like design in fact, I love design but design should work WITH a concept and not against it. Too many times I found myself skipping over a shout out or inset so I could finish a chapter and then forgetting to go back and read something. That is not good. The design should be set up better so complete thoughts can end and allow students to also read the inlays/insets. It's highly fragmented.

Still, I'm not going to give it a low rating because the overall information was good and it wasn't poorly written (though there were certain chapters I took issue with).

A must have for any Project Manager

The PRINCE2 2009 release has kept up with the times and PM improvements and once again is... brilliant!! Areas such as the principles, focusing on benefits (business case), governance, quality, process, roles and responsibilities are practically and cohesively presented. Also the consistent format and approach of the OGC methods (Managing Successful Programmes (Office of Government Commerce), Portfolio, Programme and Project Offices: P3O (P30), Management of Risk: Guidance for Practitioners (Office of Government Commerce)and now PRINCE2 2009 and Mop Management of Portfolios) is helpful and well integrated. PRINCE2 nicely integrates the six variables involved in any project, and therefore six aspects of project performance to be managed: Costs, Timescales, Scope, Quality, Risk and most importantly Benefits... Most frameworks only really deal with the first three (the traditional triple constraint)... PRINCE2 incorporates all of these sensibly.

For any project manager PRINCE2 is immediately practical and useful and will improve the success of any project. The challenge, however, with less senior project managers is they are uncomfortable with any governance or assurance on their projects or deliverables which PRINCE2 incorporates. They also immediately presume PRINCE2 is an administrative, process heavy, bureaucratic framework... which is a common misconception as it is designed to be tailorable and throughout recommends "common sense"...

For project managers who have been brought up by PMI and PMBOK and who want to write the exams, I strongly recommend taking the course. There are noticeable "philosophical" differences that are best worked through and understood in a classroom environment to truely understand PRINCE2. That said, PMBOK and PRINCE2 are completely complementary and strongly benefit each other, as each improves on the ommissions / weak areas of the other. Keep in mind there is a strong relationship between the course and the PRINCE2 manual. The manual is designed to help practitioners through the exams, though obviously it is also an invaluable reference manual as well. Also, for practitioners that have passed the course and exam, I would also recommend either the online or PDF version as it is nice to have the information, graphics and templates available in electronic format.

The PRINCE2 project management methodology is highly recommended as a foundation standard. The figures in the Kinde e-book, however, has very poor resolution and the book responds slowly on my iPad. Further, it lacks a table of contents making navigation difficult.

Enjoyable breezy read

One of best humour books which accurately portrays the modern life of working professionals. Without letting the cat out of the bag, it is kind of a love story of a successful but soon to be divorced professional in his late 30s with a single mother of a toddler. There many pages where you will burst out laughing and your partner or room mate will look at you curiously but that is an occupational hazard.

Enjoyable and easy read. Recommended for inflight reading, reading in the Airport lounge or on the Airport bus taking you to your flight. I recommend the paper back as no Air Hostess will ask you to turn it off while waiting for the Aircraft to takeoff

Sid is a lively, active, extrovert, open and easygoing character. An interesting fiction story of Sorting Out Sid is about so many things happening in the life of Sid and how he manages to tackle each of the situation. Sid (Siddharth Agarwal) has been married to Mandira for 15 years and has reached to the peak of his career at an early age of 36. He becomes a Vice President of its sales division and interestingly is termed as CTO (Chief Toilet Office) by his boss as the company is into selling of toilet products.

The cover though simple is attractive and gives an insight into the protagonist Sid. The title is catchy, making one wonder what is in store.

WHAT I FELT ABOUT THE BOOK?

HIGHS

Storyline – Relevant, something we can relate to in today’s life.

Language – Simple and engaging.

Characters - Well etched with all their imperfections. One can relate to each one of them. We are all surrounded by the likes of Sid, Aditi, Neha, Mandira, Sunny, Vikas, Akash and Ms. Meenakshi. Some we recognize, some we ignore and some we deny. But the fact remains that they are all there around us.
Each of the characters contributes to the story.

Message - The book is a wake-up call to the innumerable Sid’s busy making a career at the cost of a meaningful family life. It gives us an insight into the reasons for the ever increasing break –ups, divorces and embittered relationships the Indian Society is witnessing today.

LOWS

Length and momentum - The first part to me seemed to drag forcing me to put down the book quite often. However by the time I reached the second part things started gaining momentum. Fewer pages would have meant a crispier, engaging narrative right from the word ‘go.’

Humor- Each person’s sense of humor is different. So for me was this tale truly hilarious as mentioned in the back cover? Well, there were certainly a few places where my face broke out into a smile. But did I laugh out loud? No.

Editing - Unnecessary repetitions at a few places.

MY RECOMMENDATION

If you are looking for a light read. Then, this is definitely one you can place your hands on.

WINDING UP

The most relevant quote in the entire book-

Neha telling Sid: “All you do is use people to feel better about yourself.”
