Grade 1-3?A simple, funny story combined with some basic math concepts that are so well integrated into the narrative that most readers won't even notice they're there. Tom the cat likes "to bake yummy things," and he begins by making a dozen chocolate cookies. He invites two of his friends over to enjoy his treats, but this weak-willed feline devours the cookies before they arrive. The story proceeds in a predictable way as Tom continues to bake goodies, which he carefully divides to share fairly, and ends up eating them also. Throughout the story, subtle math problems arise. How does one divide eight cookies onto three plates, or cut a square cake into three equal pieces? How much time does Tom have before his friends arrive? Youngsters do not have to solve these puzzles while reading the story; they are presented at the back of the book. Simple hands-on activities reinforce the concepts (for the cookie example, it is suggested that the child count pennies onto drawn plates). The text is appropriate for independent reading, although it could be used as a one-on-one read-aloud as well. The zany cartoon art will no doubt appeal to children; Tom wears a large bow tie, striped apron, and shorts with stars on them. A hungry cat bakes 12 cookies and invites over two friends to share them, but each time he divides the cookies into equal shares, he gets hungry, gobbles them up, and has to bake something else. The wild cartoon illustrations add to the kitchen mess, and kids will enjoy the slapstick while they figure out the math. As in Stuart Murphy's Divide and Ride , the book ends with several suggested activities for helping children learn about division and remainders. Hazel Rochman

About the Author
As soon as Joanne Rocklin learned to hold a pencil she began writing poems, stories, and diaries. She loved reading her stories and library books to her two younger sisters and has always lived within walking distance of a library.

Joanne has written more than 15 books for children. She gives frequent talks to classroom and adult audiences, and has been a speaker for the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, the California Reading Association, and UCLA Extension.

Joanne has worked as a licensed psychologist and an elementary school teacher and now writes full time. She was a participant as a Writer-in-Residence in the 1995 University of Southern California Project, a collaborative university-school program to improve student writing and the teaching of writing in the classroom. She is on the Advisory Committee for the Museum of Tolerance “Once Upon A World” Storytelling Program of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, and is a founding member of California Readers.

Originally from Montreal, Canada, Joanne Rocklin has two grown sons, Michael and Eric, and live in Los Angeles with her husband, Gerry, and three cats.

Sharing is Caring but Eating is Good Too...

I read this book to my friend's 6 year old son. He didn't seem as interested in this book as another I had read to him (see my review of Arctic Fives Arrive) but once we got into the story, he seemed to enjoy it. The plot is one of a cat who makes 12 cookies and wants to share with his friends. He begins with 4 cookies for each of his two friends and himself but quickly dashes through a series of yummy mishaps. As another reviewer commented, he did not understand the concept of division but did know what sharing equally meant.

Finally, the cat is able to come to a solution but after that, the friends keep trying to evenly share their treat with the cat (5 pages worth of back and forth chatter) which lost my kid's attention. However, I was able to regain it by bringing out 12 real cookies that I had brought with me and we did a couple of the activities in the back before getting a glass of milk.

Great Addition to All About The Series

The book tells you all about the island nation. The story is mostly told through the eyes of three cousins. You learn about their families, where they live, and their traditions, all while learning about the diverse geography and population of the country. As the subtitle says, you learn through stories, songs, crafts and games, all of which help to keep the target audience of 3rd to 6th graders engaged. For instance, you can make a simple parol (straw star) and learn why they were used. You can travel to the different islands that make up the country and learn how the people and culture of each are different. And, you can learn about the history of the island and how it became an independent country. All told with great cartoon-like illustrations in a way to both inform and entertain the reader.

Overall a great book for the 8-12 year old to learn more about the country’s history and the daily life of the local residents. I think we may just have to try one of the recipes in the book. Some of the recipes are more child friendly than others, but after watching some of the kids cooking shows on TV, if you’re child is comfortable in the kitchen, can probably do them all. A superb introduction to the Philippines to foster global awareness in children

What a superb introduction to the Philippines for children! Gidget Jimenez does a remarkable job of explaining the diversity of this multi-island nation using three cousins who describe differences and similarities in their daily lives, favorite foods, culture and religions. She synthesizes pertinent history, geography, environmental and cultural issues in a nuanced, but very kid friendly way. Filippino words, games and recipes are sprinkled throughout. This would be easy reading for grade school kids, but parents, grandparents and teachers could read this appealing book to younger kids and they would gain so much. I will wager many adults will learn quite a bit, as I did. Corazon Dandan-Albano's illustrations welcome the reader into the text, with a whimsical appealing charm. This book belongs in schools and libraries everywhere.

LOVE the illustrations!

First of all, I love that the book has three kids giving you a tour of life in the Philippines, and that, while they look nothing alike, are all related through their mothers! It captures the diversity and flavor of the Philippines. Ms. Dandan-Albano’s illustrations really bring the culture to life and perfectly compliment the educational value of the text. The illustrations make the reading fun. I recommend this book to older children, as it is twice the length of a traditional picturebook or for parents and teachers looking to do units on different countries. The book is packed full of activities, not just facts.

About the Author
John T. Warren (Late) was professor of Speech Communication at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. His major research and teaching centered in Communication Pedagogy, Performance Studies, and Communication and Critical/Cultural Studies. He was the author of numerous books including Performing Purity: Whiteness, Pedagogy and the Reconstitution of Power; Casting Gender: Women and Performance in Intercultural Contexts; Critical Communication Pedagogy; and the SAGE Handbook of Communication and Instruction. He also authored articles for several education and communication studies journals, including Educational Theory, Communication Education, and Text and Performance Quarterly.

Deanna L. Fassett is Department Chair and professor of communication pedagogy at San José State University where she has, since 2002, mentored her department’s graduate student instructors.  She is the author and editor of three other books:  Coordinating the Communication Course:  A Guidebook, Critical Communication Pedagogy, The SAGE Handbook of Communication and Instruction, and Communication: A Critical/Cultural Introduction, Second Edition. Her published research has appeared in a broad array of communication studies journals, including Basic Communication Course Annual, Communication Education, Liminalities: A Journal of Performance Studies, and Text and Performance Quarterly.

this textbook was better than others

As a student, this textbook was better than others. It worded certain things differently than a normal one would. It put it in simpler language. The simple language allowed me to understand the terms a little bit better. The book and my professor combined made me switch my major, so that I could study communication. I loved how cheap it was too. Most textbooks are at least double this price which becomes extremely expensive.

Only if you need it

I only bought this because it was required for my class. This book trys to read easier than a normal textbook, but does the exact oppisite. The author was very biased, and it shows when you read it. Also, there are definitions and examples in this that conflict with other classes that focus on a more in depth study of the given topic.My opinon is, if you need it for class, buy or rent it whatever is cheaper, if not, don't waste your money, there are better communication books out there.

Terrible read, the writers are horribly biased

Obligated to get this book for a communications class. Terrible read, the writers are horribly biased, the format is chunked together making it difficult to grasp important information, and the definitions for the vocabulary are practically non-existent. Originally purchased the 1st Edition to this book only to realize that is completely different then this 2nd Edition forcing me to purchase this one.

This book should be subtitled, "The Power of No More Bulls***"

This was a really amazing book. It literally changed my life. I have been reading a lot of self-development and psychology books and there are similar messages in all of them, including this one. This book just approaches it from a more simplistic "just do it" kind of perspective without all the scientific jargon of how you are rewiring your brain.

The end goal here is that amidst the spiritual undertones of the book, what Tolle is really educating people about is self-awareness, which is the cornerstone of growing emotional intelligence. I was reading Daniel Goleman's book, "Emotional Intelligence" at the same time and the parallels were quite obvious. The additional benefit that Tolle offers is walking through some meditations and affirmations and presenting the information in a way that is like an easy to digest conversation.

After I was about halfway through the book, I had a moment of sitting in my car by myself, and had the thought, "I don't have to take this bulls*** anymore, I am not a victim," and then I laughed for about five minutes and many months later, still feel great about all of the things I was able to let go of.

Life is in the NOW

Since a large percentage of our patient office visits are anxiety & stress based over past occurances or future worries, I think this book has the ability to wake people up to treating their medical issues in a different way. As physicians, I believe we must teach our patients skills instead of following Big Pharma & insurance companies demands to push 10 minute drug visits only. This book is a great help to bring people into present moment where we are not only okay but truly alive. I re listen to the audio version while doing my walks.

Eckhart Tolle's, The Power of Now, is a monumental achievement in spiritual literature.

The theme of the Power of Now is that you can find and maintain a deep sense of peace, joy and fulfillment, and in doing so, "return home to yourself." These concepts are very real and attainable. The goal is to break through the barrier of the noise of the mind. When you do this, it is like having total awareness of being alive. It is like being able to see the world with clarity and without the constant stream of mental judgments, mental noise and fear. Even the appearance of objects seems so different and vibrant. And even physical space takes on new meaning -- you sense that everything is connected. Knowledge takes on a deeper dimension that transcends language. Instead of having faith in God, you know and feel God. You go through life having a deep sense of peace and joy. You feel that peace and joy within yourself and external to yourself. It is a life with little mental fear. The peace you feel is not like coming home to yourself, it is coming home to yourself, meaning your natural state of being. When you realign with yourself, it becomes obvious that this state is the way you were meant to be.

A main theme to Eckhart Tolle's book, The Power of Now, is that humanity can change, but it will start with individuals returning to their spiritual center. Just as humanity can learn from the past of what it doesn't want to be; humanity can learn from the past what it wants to be. His message is that we need to look to the past and see the common thread of messages of hope given to us. These messages of hope are: (1) that we are spiritual beings; (2) that we do have an innate joy and peace within; (3) that we essentially have God within us; and (4) that we can experience a new reality that is radically different, but radically true to whom we are.

The Power of Now's message is that many people of he past and present have broken the barrier of fear and discontentment; they have rediscovered or reconnected with their deep sense of peace and joy. In our lack of understanding, we often refer to these people with terminology that may not really be accurate: "enlightened," "awakened," "mystics," "gurus," "holy," etc. These terms are too loaded and create an impression that such a state is unlikely to occur to the average person. We can find our peace and joy and find it now. We are not discriminated against when it comes to God's Grace.

Tolle aids the process of coming home to ourselves. He provides us with an age-old message and road map to achieve this. The road map is simple, yet so profound. The message is simply: we need to quiet our minds.

So, how do we quiet our minds according to Tolle? How do we realign with ourselves? How do we take off the onion layers to our minds and reconnect with that joyful and peaceful part of ourselves?

The term meditation is probably not what you think or have been taught. Meditation as it used here is more a way of life that can be used in any and every activity you do for the rest of your life. Eckhart Tolle talks about different ways to get reconnected with ourselves. What is interesting is that many of the methods are somewhat mechanical, and the process is less spiritual than one might think. The end result, however, is certainly deeply spiritual.

Some of these methods are:

1. Breathing and being aware of your breathing;
2. Being the witness of your thoughts without judgment -- allowing thoughts to flow without identifying with your thoughts -- deeply acknowledging that you are not our thoughts;
3. Feeling your physical body and allowing it be without judgment;
4. Feeling your emotional body (including the emotional pain) and allowing it be without going on thinking tangents about the pain -- just being there with the raw physical emotional pain.
5. Getting in touch with the silence and stillness that is ever present; (so as you listening intently to the world around, you pay attention also to the silence that is behind all sounds);
6. Being totally present where you are and allowing that which happens to be;
7. Acknowledge and avoid the traps of time -- with a deep understanding that in reality what happened in the past is no longer; and what happens in the future is not now (basically time really does not, from a physics perspective, exist);
8. Accepting what you are at any given moment;
9. The simple act of asking God to allow you to feel His presence/His Grace, and then, the act of you feeling God's presence;
10. To go deep inside yourself and realize that innate joy that is ever present -- God.
11. Feeling the stillness within yourself.

One myth is that to obtain peace, joy and God, you need to takes years of monk-like seclusion. In fact, finding what was traditionally known as "enlightenment" could take a few minutes. The quicker you break down the noise of the mind and become present with the world without judgment, the quicker you can come home to yourself.

Excellent Book But Beware of Titles with "Introduction"

My old chemistry teacher, Mr. MacDonald, once said, "Beware of Textbooks with introduction in the title." He was right. This text was a thoroughly enjoyable read, though sometimes I was over my head. With that said, and I abhore technocrats spouting terminology, it was an excellent text with thorough explanations of risk factor calculations; I bought this book to accompany Mark Tweeddale's "Managing Risk and Reliability of Process Plants." This book is a must-have for those involved in reliability, i.e., process engineers, reliability engineers, and safety engineers.

About the Author

Richard Middleton was for many years a Reader in American History at The Queen’s University, Belfast. He is the author of The Bells of Victory: The Pitt Newcastle Ministry and the Conduct of the Seven Years’ War, 1757-1762, and Colonial America, A History, 1565-1776. He is now an independent writer and scholar.
